Paints and varnishes - Determination of mar resistance (ISO 12137:2011)
This International Standard specifies a method for determining, using a curved (loop-shaped or ring-shaped)
stylus, the mar resistance of a single coating of a paint, varnish or related product, or the upper layer of a
multicoat system.
This test has been found to be useful in comparing the mar resistance of different coatings. It is most useful in
providing relative ratings for a series of coated panels exhibiting significant differences in mar resistance.
This International Standard does not specify a method using a pointed stylus, two of which are specified in
ISO 1518-1 and ISO 1518-2, respectively. The choice between the three methods will depend on the
particular practical problem.

Dieser Teil von ISO 12137 legt ein Verfahren zum Bestimmen der Widerstandsfähigkeit einer einzelnen
Schicht aus einem Beschichtungsstoff oder der obersten Schicht eines Mehrschichtsystems gegen Kratzer
fest, bei dem ein gebogener Stichel (in Schleifen- oder Ringform) angewendet wird. Teil 2 von ISO 12137 legt
ein Verfahren mit einem spitzen Stichel fest. Welches der beiden Verfahren gewählt wird, hängt von der
jeweiligen Fragestellung ab.
Diese Prüfung wurde zum Vergleich der Kratzfestigkeit unterschiedlicher Beschichtungen als nützlich
befunden. Sie ist besonders geeignet, wenn bei einer Reihe beschichteter Probenplatten mit deutlich unterschiedlicher
Kratzfestigkeit relative Einstufungen erhalten werden sollen.

L'ISO 12137:2011 spécifie une méthode pour la détermination, à l'aide d'un stylet arrondi (en forme de boucle ou d'anneau), de la résistance à la détérioration d'une couche unique de peinture, de vernis ou de produit assimilé, ou de la couche supérieure d'un système multicouche.
Cet essai s'est avéré utile pour comparer la résistance à la détérioration de différents revêtements. II permet notamment de fournir des valeurs comparatives pour une série de panneaux revêtus présentant des différences significatives de résistance à la détérioration.
L'ISO 12137 ne spécifie pas de méthode utilisant un stylet pointu, dont deux sont spécifiés dans l'ISO 1518-1 et l'ISO 1518-2. Le choix entre les trois méthodes va dépendre du problème pratique particulier.

Ta mednarodni standard določa metodo za ugotavljanje odpornosti enojnega sloja barve, laka ali sorodnega proizvoda ali zgornjega sloja večslojnega sistema proti razenju z ukrivljenim (v obliki zanke ali obročka) tipalom.
Ta preskus je uporaben za primerjavo odpornosti proti razenju različnih premazov. Najuporabnejši je pri zagotavljanju relativnih ocen za serijo premazanih plošč, ki kažejo precejšnje razlike v odpornosti proti razenju.
Ta mednarodni standard ne določa metod z uporabo koničastega tipala, od katerih sta dve določeni v ISO 1518-1 oziroma v ISO 1518-2. Izbira med temi tremi metodami je odvisna od konkretnega praktičnega problema.

This document (EN ISO 12137:2011) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35 "Paints and
varnishes" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 139 “Paints and varnishes” the secretariat of
which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by April 2012, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the
latest by April 2012.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 12137 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9,
General test methods for paints and varnishes.
It cancels and replaces ISO 12137-1:1997, which has been technically revised. It also incorporates the
Technical Corrigendum ISO 12137-1:1997/Cor.1:1998.
The main changes are the following:
a) A definition of mar has been introduced.
b) The supplementary test conditions (formerly Annex A) have been integrated in the test report.
c) The text has been editorially revised and the normative references have been updated.

1 Scope
