Overview
SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.1.1:2007 is a harmonized European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and ETSI. Focused on electromagnetic compatibility and radio spectrum matters, this standard addresses Short Range Devices (SRD) using Ultra WideBand (UWB) technology for location tracking equipment operating in the frequency range from 6 GHz to 8.5 GHz. The document fulfills the essential requirements outlined in Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC, ensuring that radio equipment efficiently uses allocated spectrum and avoids harmful interference.
This standard is specifically intended for indoor applications involving location tracking tags attached to people or objects, tracked via a fixed infrastructure. It does not apply to equipment used aboard aircraft, ships, or at permanent outdoor locations.
Key Topics
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Requirements to prevent electromagnetic interference between UWB location tracking equipment and other radio systems.
- Radio Spectrum Use: Efficient spectrum allocation and protection against harmful interference, as mandated by Article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive.
- Short Range Device (SRD) Compliance: Technical requirements for SRDs incorporating UWB technology within the designated 6 GHz to 8.5 GHz band.
- Indoor Location Tracking: Focused on systems providing precise, safe indoor localization through UWB tags.
- Testing and Conformance: Defined procedures for verifying compliance of transmitters and receivers, including power spectral density and spurious emission limits.
- Design Considerations: Ensuring that devices use integral or dedicated antennas and operate reliably within declared environmental boundaries.
Applications
SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.1.1:2007 is highly relevant for industries and sectors utilizing UWB-based indoor location tracking solutions, such as:
- Asset Tracking: Managing valuable assets and inventory within warehouses, factories, or hospitals.
- Personnel Tracking: Ensuring safety and efficiency by monitoring the location of staff in workplaces, healthcare facilities, or secure sites.
- Smart Buildings: Supporting automation and security through reliable people and object localization.
- Retail and Logistics: Enhancing operations via real-time product and staff location monitoring.
- Research and Development: Enabling innovation in UWB technology and testing prototypes for conformity to European requirements.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and system integrators can ensure their UWB location systems are compliant with European regulations, reducing the risk of interference and facilitating market access across EU member states.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and system development, the following related standards and directives should be considered:
- EN 302 500-1: Technical characteristics and test methods for UWB location tracking devices.
- Directive 1999/5/EC (R&TTE Directive): Main regulatory framework for radio and telecommunications terminal equipment in the EU.
- ECC/DEC/(06)04: Harmonised conditions for UWB devices in bands below 10.6 GHz.
- ETSI TR 102 495-3: Technical characteristics for SRD equipment using UWB sensor technology for location tracking.
- Directive 98/34/EC: Procedure standards for technical regulations in the EU.
SIST EN 302 500-2 V1.1.1:2007 plays a crucial role in the standardization of reliable, interference-free, and regulatory-compliant UWB location tracking systems, facilitating safe adoption of innovative technologies in indoor environments throughout Europe.
