Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) - Common Interface (CI) - Part 3: Medium Access Control (MAC) layer
The present document is one of the parts of the specification of the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) Common Interface (CI). This part of the DECT CI specifies the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. The MAC layer is part 3 of the DECT Common Interface standard and layer 2a of the DECT protocol stack. It specifies three groups of MAC services:
- the broadcast message control service;
- the connectionless message control service; and
- the multi-bearer control service.
It also specifies the logical channels that are used by the above mentioned services, and how they are multiplexed and mapped into the Service Data Units (SDUs) that are exchanged with the Physical Layer (PHL).
The present document includes New Generation DECT, a further development of the DECT standard introducing wideband speech, improved data services, new slot types and other technical enhancements.
Digitalne izboljšane brezvrvične telekomunikacije (DECT) - Skupni vmesnik (CI) - 3. del: Plast krmiljenja dostopa do prenosnega medija (MAC)
Pričujoči dokument je eden izmed delov specifikacije skupnega vmesnika (CI) digitalne izboljšane brezvrvične telekomunikacije (DECT). Ta del CI DECT določa plast krmiljenja dostopa do prenosnega medija (MAC). Plast MAC je 3. del standarda skupnega vmesnika DECT in plast 2a protokolnega sklada DECT. Določa tri skupine storitev MAC:
- storitev za nadzor sporočil za oddajanje;

Overview
SIST EN 300 175-3 V2.3.1:2010 defines the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer for the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) Common Interface (CI). As Part 3 of the DECT CI and layer 2a of the DECT protocol stack, this standard specifies MAC services, logical channels, and the multiplexing/mapping rules used to build Service Data Units (SDUs) exchanged with the Physical Layer (PHL). The document also incorporates New Generation DECT enhancements such as wideband speech, improved data services and new slot types.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
The standard covers the following major technical areas:
MAC service groups
- Broadcast Message Control (BMC) - slow and continuous broadcast handling
- Connectionless Message Control (CMC) - uplink/downlink connectionless messaging
- Multi-Bearer Control (MBC) - connection-oriented multi-bearer services
Logical channels and SAPs
- Defines higher‑layer C‑plane and U‑plane logical channels (examples: C, I, G, CL, SI) and the broadcast channel (B)
- Internal MAC control channels (Q, N, M, P) and their roles
Multiplexing and mapping
- CCF/CSF multiplexing functions and bit mapping formats (D‑MAP, A‑MAP, B‑MAP)
- Tail multiplexer (T‑MUX), B‑field multiplexers (E/U‑MUX) and slot mode handling (E-type, E+U-type)
- Mapping to physical packets and slot structures (document references physical packet types such as P80, P32, P00)
Connection types and bearers
- Basic and advanced connection structures, symmetric/asymmetric connections, connection identifiers and complementary connections
- Bearer types and bearer operation
Transmission integrity and security
- Encryption, scrambling and error control mechanisms (R‑CRC, X‑CRC, B‑CRC)
Frame and state management
- Frame/multiframe structures, PP and RFP state definitions, cluster and cell site functions (CCF, CSF)
Practical Applications and Users
This standard is essential for:
- DECT equipment manufacturers (handsets, base stations, enterprise systems) implementing MAC layer functionality
- Chipset and firmware developers building MAC-side logic and multiplexers
- Test labs and interoperability teams conducting compliance and plug‑test activities
- Network integrators and product managers designing DECT solutions for voice and data, including New Generation DECT wideband voice and improved data services
- Regulators and standards specialists referencing MAC-level requirements for certification
Use cases include cordless telephony, enterprise DECT deployments, DECT-based IoT peripherals, and any application requiring reliable time‑division duplex (TDD) / TDMA MAC control in DECT radio systems.
