Pigments and extenders - Testing of colouring materials in plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-P) - Part 4: Determination of bleeding of colouring materials

This Part of EN 14469 specifies a method of establishing and evaluating quantitatively the bleeding of pigments from sheets of coloured PVC-P into material of the same kind brought into contact with them. It also sets out the way in which specimens prepared in accordance with prEN 14469-2 shall be tested. It may also be used for determine bleeding from other polymers into white PVC-P.
This Part of EN 14469 does not deal with pigment blooming (see also Annex A, informative).

Dieser Teil von EN 14469 legt ein Verfahren fest, mit dem ein mögliches Ausbluten von Pigmenten aus gefärbten PVC-P-Folien in damit in Kontakt gebrachtes gleichartiges Material festgestellt werden kann. Diese Norm legt fest, wie die nach prEN 14469-2 hergestellten Probenkörper geprüft werden müssen. Sie darf auch benutzt werden, um das Ausbluten aus anderen Kunststoffen in weißes PVC-P zu prüfen.
Dieser Teil von EN 14469 gilt nicht für das Ausblühen von Pigmenten (siehe auch Anhang A, informativ).

Overview

EN 14469-4:2004 - issued by CEN - specifies a standardized laboratory method for determining the bleeding of colouring materials (pigments and extenders) from coloured plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC‑P) into material of the same kind brought into contact with it. The method gives a reproducible way to place test specimens against white contact sheets, expose them to elevated temperature, and evaluate staining (bleeding) visually. This Part is focused on bleeding (diffusion into a contacting polymer) and does not cover pigment blooming (surface deposit phenomena).

• Specimens: Test specimens are 50 mm × 50 mm (preferably pressed) prepared per EN 14469-2.
• Contact sheets: White PVC‑P contact sheets (minimum 75 mm × 75 mm × 0.5 mm) prepared per EN 14469-2.
• Apparatus:
  • Drying oven with forced air circulation, (80 ± 5) °C
  • Aluminium or plate glass support plates
  • Roller to ensure close contact
  • Load of at least 500 g
• Procedure:
  • Place specimen between two white contact sheets, remove trapped air with a roller, enclose between plates and apply load.
  • Keep assemblies in the oven for 24 hours at (80 ± 5) °C.
  • After cooling, separate contact sheets and evaluate immediately.
• Evaluation:
  • Visual assessment of staining using the grey scale for assessing staining (EN 20105‑A03); use the white edge of the contact sheet (not in contact) as reference.
  • Immediate evaluation is recommended because diffusion may continue during storage.
• Test report must include identification of pigment, reference to EN 14469-4, specimen preparation reference (EN 14469-2), percentage of colouring material added, grey-scale rating result, method deviations and date of test.
• Terminology: Annex A clarifies the distinction between migration, bleeding and blooming and notes blooming is not covered due to repeatability limitations.
