SIST EN 14952:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 14952:2005 from CEN. It specifies a laboratory method for determining the water absorption of unbound minerals with grain size up to 6 mm for outdoor sports surfaces, so laboratories, surface suppliers, and specifiers can compare materials on the same basis.
What does SIST EN 14952:2006 specify?
SIST EN 14952:2006 specifies one test method for measuring how much water an unbound mineral absorbs when it is used in an outdoor sports surface. The standard is organized into eight clauses: Scope, Principle, Apparatus, Test specimen, Conditioning, Procedure, Expression of results, and Test report.
The method is intended for loose mineral material rather than bound surfacing systems. In practice, that means the result characterizes the mineral material itself and helps users judge whether a material is suitable for sports-area applications.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 14952:2006?
SIST EN 14952:2006 measures water absorption by placing a dry specimen in a perforated cylinder and standing it in water for a fixed time. The result is the mass gain of the specimen, first in grams and then as a percentage of dry mass.
- Clause 2, Principle - The specimen is compacted, immersed in water, then weighed before and after immersion. This gives a direct measure of how much water the mineral takes up, which is what buyers and laboratories need for comparison.
- Clause 3, Apparatus - The standard specifies the main equipment: cylinder, water tank, compaction apparatus, supporting ring, funnel, and measuring devices for time and mass. This matters because the method depends on a defined setup, not just any container and balance.
- Clause 4, Test specimen - The specimen must have a grain size of 6 mm and a mass of at least 5 000 g, then be dried and later brought to laboratory temperature and humidity. This ensures the test starts from a known condition and that moisture already in the sample does not distort the result.
- Clause 5, Conditioning - The test is carried out under laboratory conditions of 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity, within the tolerances stated in the standard. This helps make results comparable between laboratories.
- Clause 6, Procedure - The standard requires a measured portion of the specimen, filling through a funnel, 10 compaction blows, immersion in a water layer, and a 15-minute soaking period. This gives a repeatable test sequence, so different operators can obtain comparable values.
- Clause 7, Expression of results - Water absorption is calculated from the mass before and after soaking, then compared between repeated tests. If the two results are close enough, the average is reported; if not, the procedure is repeated and the reporting rule changes accordingly. This tells the user how to handle inconsistent results.
- Clause 8, Test report - The report has to identify the absorption result, the reference to EN 14952:2005, the nature of the specimen, and any deviation from the procedure. This is important for traceability in quality control and product acceptance.
What terms does SIST EN 14952:2006 define?
SIST EN 14952:2006 uses a small set of technical terms and symbols in a fixed way:
- Unbound minerals - Mineral material used loose, not held together by a binder.
- Water absorption - The increase in mass after the specimen has been in water for the specified time.
- Test specimen - The prepared portion of material that is actually tested.
- Dry mass, D - The mass of the specimen after drying, used as the reference for the percentage calculation.
- A - The mass of the cylinder plus the dry specimen before immersion.
- B - The mass of the cylinder plus the specimen after it has absorbed water.
- Compaction apparatus - The falling-weight device used to compact the specimen before immersion.
Who uses SIST EN 14952:2006?
SIST EN 14952:2006 is used by testing laboratories, sports-surface manufacturers, and material suppliers who need a standard way to measure water absorption. It is also relevant to quality managers, specifiers, and buyers selecting mineral materials for outdoor sports areas.
In practice, these users apply the standard for product comparison, incoming inspection, and conformity checks on mineral surfacing materials. It is most useful when a project needs a repeatable laboratory result rather than a visual or approximate assessment.
What does the SIST EN 14952:2006 document contain?
SIST EN 14952:2006 contains a complete test method, from specimen preparation to reporting. It includes a principle statement, apparatus requirements, specimen preparation and conditioning steps, the immersion procedure, and the calculation rules for reporting results.
The document also includes four schematic figures showing the cylinder, the cylinder in the water tank, the compaction apparatus, and the supporting ring. These figures help laboratories set up the test equipment consistently.
The procedure and calculation sections are the most practical parts for day-to-day use because they define how to prepare the sample, how long to soak it, and how to calculate and report the absorption result.
