Overview
SIST ETS 300 487:2000 is a Slovenian standard identical to the European ETS 300 487, developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This standard specifies the Radio Frequency (RF) requirements for Receive-Only Mobile Earth Stations (ROMES) operating in the 1.5 GHz frequency band within the Land Mobile Satellite Service (LMSS) framework. The focus is on equipment providing one-way data communications via satellite, covering both portable and vehicle-installed ROMES configurations. The primary aim is to ensure that such equipment operates effectively without causing harmful interference to terrestrial and satellite radiocommunication services.
Key Topics
Applicability: The standard covers ROMES operating between 1,525 MHz and 1,544 MHz, and 1,555 MHz and 1,559 MHz, specifically for land mobile satellite systems in the space-to-Earth link.
Operating Environments: Devices can be either Portable Equipment (PE) or Installed Equipment (IE) in vehicles, supporting diverse user needs.
Radiated Emission Limits: Strict EIRP (Equivalent Isotropically Radiated Power) thresholds are provided for each relevant frequency band, protecting other services from unwanted emissions.
Testing Requirements:
- Test Conditions: Testing must be conducted over a -10°C to +55°C temperature range and 20% to 70% non-condensing humidity.
- Test Equipment: Details on required measurement apparatus, such as antennas, spectrum analyzers, and special test equipment (STE).
- Emission Measurement: Defined procedures ensure spurious emissions are accurately measured across relevant frequency ranges, both for vertical and horizontal polarizations.
Exclusions: The standard explicitly does not address Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) or safety aspects, which are covered by other standards.
Applications
The practical application of SIST ETS 300 487:2000 lies in the design, manufacturing, and conformity assessment of satellite receive-only mobile terminals, particularly those:
- Used by emergency services, fleet management, transport, and logistics providers that rely on reliable one-way communication via satellite.
- Installed as data receivers in vehicles or used as portable field equipment.
- Integrated into wider satellite communication systems for delivering data to end-users in remote or mobile scenarios.
Key benefits for stakeholders:
- Manufacturers: Provides clear RF emission criteria, supporting equipment approval and market access across Europe.
- Regulators: Ensures standardized measurement practices for emission control, safeguarding spectrum use.
- End-users: Assures quality and performance of ROMES devices, minimizing risk of interference.
Related Standards
- ITU Radio Regulations: Governs global allocation and use of the 1.5 GHz satellite frequency bands.
- ETS 300 133-5 (ERMES): Referenced for test procedures, particularly for receiver conformance in paging systems.
- SIST standards for EMC and electrical safety: ROMES devices must also comply with relevant EMC and safety standards not covered in this document.
- Other ETSI SES standards: Covering additional earth station system categories, including transmitting terminals and interactive systems.
Keywords: Satellite Earth Stations, Receive-Only Mobile Earth Stations, ROMES, data communications, 1.5 GHz band, Land Mobile Satellite Service, RF specifications, emission limits, ETSI, SIST, radio frequency testing, spurious emissions.
By adhering to SIST ETS 300 487:2000, manufacturers and service providers support the robust, interference-free operation of mobile satellite data services critical for modern communications infrastructure.
