TITLE:
Amendment 1 - Magnetic materials - Part 1: Classification

PROPOSED STABILITY DATE: 2030
NOTE FROM TC/SC OFFICERS:
IEC/TC 68 decided, at their meeting in November 2022 at Osaka, to start the project of amending IEC
60404-1:2016 ED 3. The work was allocated to TC 68/WG 1 and WG5. The amendment is focused on
the new class R of domain-refined grain-oriented electrical steel and some new permanent magnetic
materials.

21 4.3.2.2.3 Basis of subclassification
22 Add the following text after the end of the paragraph:
23 With the revision of IEC 60404-8-7 in 2020, an additional subclassification has been
24 introduced in order to distinguish between high-permeability grades with and without magnetic
25 domain refinement.
26 4.3.2.2.5 Physical characteristics
27 Add the following list item after existing “• magnetic ….”:
28 • DR (Domain Refined) state: whether or not the material has been treated with a
29 technology for magnetic domain refinement;
30 Add the following note before the existing final paragraph (starting with “In addition, …”):
31 NOTE: According to IEC 60404-8-7, the magnetic properties of non-heatproof magnetic
32 domain refined high-permeability grades are to be determined according to IEC 60404-3
33 without applying a supplementary heat treatment, and in the case of heatproof magnetic
34 domain refinement grades, these properties are to be determined in accordance with IEC
35 60404-2 after the required heat treatment.
