This Part of this European Standard describes a method for specifying decorative and protective anodic oxidation coatings on aluminium. It is applicable to the specification of coatings mainly of aluminium oxide, which are formed on aluminium by an electrolytic oxidation process in which the aluminium acts as the anode.

Anwendungsbereich
Dieser Teil dieser Europäischen Norm beschreibt eine Methode zur Spezifizierung dekorativer und
schützender anodisch erzeugter Oxidschichten auf Aluminium.
Er gilt für die Spezifizierung von Schichten, hauptsächlich aus Aluminiumoxid, die auf Aluminium durch
einen elektrolytischen Oxidationsprozess erzeugt werden, in dem das Aluminium als Anode geschaltet
wird.
Er gilt nicht zur Spezifizierung von:
a) porenfreien Oxidschichten, die als Sperrschicht wirken;
b) Schichten, die durch Anodisieren mit Chrom- oder Phosphorsäure erzeugt wurden;
c) Oxidschichten, die lediglich dazu vorgesehen sind, das Grundmetall für die nachfolgende Aufbrin-
gung organischer Schichten oder die elektrolytische Abscheidung von Metallen vorzubereiten;
d) ? hartanodisierte " Schichten, die überwiegend für technische Zwecke verwendet werden, für die Abrieb
und Verschleißfestigkeit die primären Eigenschaften sind (siehe ISO 10074).
WARNHINWEIS Diese Norm ist für Kunden gedacht, die die Anodisierung eines Erzeugnisses fordern, und
umfasst eine Checkliste von Eigenschaften, die möglicherweise relevant oder nichtrelevant sein können. Sie
enthält Anforderungen, die zwischen den interessierten Parteien zu vereinbaren sind und wird als eine
Methode zur Spezifizierung und nicht als Spezifikation vorgelegt. Es kann nicht gefordert werden, dass eine
anodisch erzeugte Oxidschicht mit dieser Norm übereinstimmt.

Domaine d'application
Cette partie de la présente Norme européenne décrit une méthode de spécification des revetements décoratifs et protecteurs obtenus par oxydation anodique sur aluminium.
Elle s'applique a la spécification des revetements d'oxyde d'aluminium principalement, qui sont formés sur l'aluminium par un procédé d'oxydation électrolytique, dans lequel l'aluminium agit comme l'anode.
La présente Norme européenne ne s'applique pas :
a) aux revetements d'oxyde non poreux, de type couche de barriere ;
b) aux revetements obtenus par anodisation a l'acide chromique ou acide phosphorique ;
c) aux revetements d'oxyde destinés uniquement a la préparation du substrat pour application ultérieure de revetements organiques pour dépôt électrolytiques de métaux ;
d) aux revetements « anodisés durs », utilisés principalement dans des applications techniques, pour lesquels la résistance a l'abrasion et a l'usure sont les principales caractéristiques (voir ISO 10074).

A summary of the subclause references relating to this information is given in table 1.NOTE

Page 12EN 12373-1:20015Tests5.1 Sampling proceduresWhere appropriate, sampling procedures shall be specified by the purchaser. Guidance on thechoice of suitable sampling procedures is given in ISO 2859-1.NOTE
As an example, the Qualanod specification [1] provides an indication of a suitable samplingprocedure for external architectural finishes.5.2 Test piecesWherever practicable, test pieces shall be production components. However, if by agreementspecial test pieces are prepared for convenience in reference or acceptance tests, they shall beproduced in the same way as the production components.5.3 Acceptance testsAcceptance tests shall be specified by the purchaser.5.4 Reference testsIn cases of dispute, the appropriate reference tests specified in this European Standard shall beused.5.5 Production control testsTests for production control purposes are at the discretion of the anodizer.6Coating thickness6.1 GeneralAnodic oxidation coatings are designated by their thickness class, in micrometres; the requiredthickness of a coating is of the utmost importance and shall always be specified.6.2 ClassificationAnodic oxidation coatings are graded according to the minimum allowed value of the averagethickness (minimum average thickness) in micrometres. Typical thickness classes are given inTable 2 and guidance on the use of appropriate thickness classes is given in annex D.For anodic oxidation coatings designed to impart particular surface properties, a higher averagethickness can be selected, and additional intermediate values of average thickness can be specifiedif necessary, but in no case shall the minimum local thickness on a single piece be less than 80 %of the minimum average thickness.SIST EN 12373-1:2002

For coatings of thickness less than 5 µm, the microscopical method cannot normally beused and a minimum mass of coating per unit area, measured by the gravimetric method (seeclause 17), shall be agreed between the interested parties.Thickness measurements shall be made on the significant surfaces in accordance with annex C butno measurement shall be made within 5 mm of the areas of anodic contact, nor in the immediatevicinity of a sharp edge.SIST EN 12373-1:2002



Page 14EN 12373-1:20017Quality of sealing7.1 GeneralThe quality of hydrothermal sealing is of great importance and sealing is always essential, whetherspecified or not, except where an unsealed or cold impregnated coating is expressly requested.NOTE
Anodic oxidation coatings sealed in dichromate solutions cannot be evaluated by the methodsdescribed in 7.2.2.1 and 7.2.2.2.7.2 Assessment of sealing quality7.2.1 Reference testsIn cases of dispute, the quality of sealing for internal architectural and decorative coatings shall bedetermined by the method specified in EN 12373-6, and for external architectural coatings by themethod specified in EN 12373-7.NOTE
For most applications, especially architectural, the maximum accepted loss of mass of anodicoxidation coatings is 30 mg/dm2.7.2.2 Production control tests7.2.2.1 Admittance measurementsWhere required, admittance shall be determined in accordance with EN 12373-5.For anodic oxidation coatings sealed in steam or hot water, sealing is normally considered to besatisfactory if the corrected admittance value is less than 20 µS relative to a 20 µm coating.NOTE 1
This value is sometimes difficult to achieve with dark electrolytically coloured coatings. Othervalues may need to be agreed between the anodizer and the purchaser.NOTE 2
Certain additions to hot water sealing baths can affect the admittance values, in which case theappropriate reference method (see 7.2.1) should be used to determine the quality of sealing.7.2.2.2 Estimation of loss of absorptive power of anodic oxidation coatings after sealingWhere required, loss of absorptive power shall be determined in accordance with EN 12373-4.Sealing is normally considered to be satisfactory if dye absorption ratings of 0, 1 or 2 on thecolour scale are obtained.NOTE

Page 15EN 12373-1:20018Quality of cold impregnationIf hydrothermal sealing is not required, appropriate cold impregnation processes based on nickelfluoride shall be specified. The quality of cold impregnation is also very important, and the testmethods to be used are those specified in 7.2.1 for the reference tests and 7.2.2.2 for productioncontrol tests.NOTE
In critical applications, such as externally in architecture, the cold impregnation processshould be followed by an additional sealing step, such as a short period of conventional sealing, orby nickel sulfate treatment at above 60 C.9Appearance and colour9.1 Visible defectsAnodized articles shall be free from visible defects on the significant surface(s) when viewedfrom a distance of not less than 5 m for external architectural applications, 3 m for internalarchitectural applications or 0,5 m for decorative applications. If requested by the purchaser, theposition(s) and maximum size(s) of the contact mark(s) shall be agreed between the anodizer andthe purchaser.9.2 Colour and surface textureThe colour and surface texture, and their tolerances, shall be specified by the purchaser. Ifrequired for matching purposes, the acceptable limits of variation shall be defined by at least twoagreed samples.Anodized aluminium has the property of double reflection from the surfaces of the oxidation layerand of the basis metal. Therefore, when matching colour samples, they shall be held in the sameplane and viewed as near to normal as is practicable, with the direction of working (e.g. therolling, extrusion or machining direction) always the same. A diffuse source of illumination shallbe placed above and behind the viewer.Unless otherwise agreed, colours shall be compared in diffuse daylight from a northerly aspect. Ifthe coloured coatings are to be used in artificial light, this lighting shall be used for colourcomparison.The agreed colour control samples shall be stored in a dry place in the dark.9.3 Production controlFor production control purposes, it can be convenient to use colour measuring instruments forrecording or grading colours.SIST EN 12373-1:2002



Page 16EN 12373-1:200110Corrosion resistanceIf required by the purchaser, the anodic oxidation coating can be tested for resistance to corrosionby, for example, the AASS test specified in ISO 9227. The choice of method and period ofexposure and acceptance criteria shall be agreed between the anodizer and the purchaser.NOTE
Rating of corroded samples can be carried out using the systems described in EN 12373-18:2001or EN 12373-19:2001.11Abrasion resistanceIf specified by the purchaser, the abrasion resistance of the anodic oxidation coating shall bedetermined using the most appropriate method selected from those described in EN 12373-9and EN 12373-10. The test to be carried out and the acceptable value for abrasion resistance shallbe specified by the purchaser to the anodizer.
