Unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures - Part 46: Test method for the determination of the moisture condition value

This standard specifies the method for the determination of the Moisture Condition Value of mixtures. The standard describes the principle of the test, the apparatus required, the test procedures, and the expression and reporting of the results. The standard is applicable to the testing of laboratory prepared or production mixtures and to mixtures susceptible to crushing during compaction. The tests are appropriate to that part of the mixture up to a maximum particle size of 20 mm.

EN 13286-46:2003 (E)51 ScopeThis European Standard specifies the method for the determination of the moisture condition value of mixtures. The moisture condition value test determines the suitability of a mixture for placing, compaction and trafficking byconstruction equipment. The European Standard is applicable to the testing of laboratory prepared or production mixtures and to mixturessusceptible to crushing during compaction. The tests are appropriate to that part of the mixture up to a maximum particle size of 20 mm.2 Normative referenceThis European Standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. Thesenormative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the publications are listed hereafter. Fordated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this EuropeanStandard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the latest edition of thepublication referred to applies (including amendments).EN 1097-5, Tests for mechanical and physical properties of aggregates — Part 5: Determination of the watercontent by drying in a ventilated oven.3 Term and definitionFor the purposes of this European Standard, the following term and definition apply.3.1moisture condition valuevalue describing the moisture state of a mixture relative to its compactability4 PrincipleThe test involves the determination of the compactive effort necessary in terms of the number of blows of a rammerto almost fully compact a sample of the mixture under test.NOTEThe test is based on the fact that relations between density and moisture content produced by different compactiveefforts tend to converge as the moisture content increases.A sample of the mixture is placed in a mould and the penetration of the rammer into the mould is measured atvarious stages of compaction. The penetration of the rammer at any given number of blows is compared with thepenetration for four times as many blows and the change in penetration is determined. The change in penetration isplotted against the logarithm (to the base 10) of the number of blows corresponding to a change in penetration of5 mm in the plotted curve.5 Apparatus5.1 Moisture condition apparatusThe moisture condition apparatus shall include a frame, a mould, a rammer, a separating disc and a means ofmeasuring the penetration or protrusion of the rammer to an accuracy of 0,1 mm.NOTEThe main features of the moisture condition apparatus are shown in Figure 1.SIST EN 13286-46:2004

EN 13286-46:2003 (E)65.1.1Frame, including the base and guide rods, of robust construction. The mass of the base shall be at least31 kg. A means of positively locating the mould on the base shall be provided.NOTEProvided the rammer can fall vertically and freely, no special ground support or plinth is required.5.1.2Mould cylinder, detachable from the mould base and so designed that, when detached, the internal boreshall be uninterrupted throughout its length. The mould shall be permeable at the base. The permeability shall be such that water discharges from the mould, when maintained at a constant head of175 mm above the base of the mould, at a rate of between 4 l/min and 7 l/min.The inner surface of the mould cylinder shall have a protective coating. The internal diameter of the mould shall be between 100,00 mm and 100,10 mm.
