Overview

EN 15301-1:2007 - "Surfaces for sports areas - Part 1: Determination of rotational resistance" is a CEN standard that defines a laboratory and site test method to measure the rotational resistance (torque required to initiate rotation) of sports surfaces. The method quantifies the frictional / traction behaviour a test sole experiences when turned on a surface and is applicable to a wide range of sports surfaces including synthetic turf and needle‑punched systems.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Principle: measure the force/torque required to initiate rotational movement of a standardized test sole in contact with the sports surface.
  • Apparatus: a weighted test foot assembly comprising a steel disc (150 ± 2 mm), mounted test sole, shaft with lifting handles, two‑handled mechanical torque wrench (0–80 Nm scale), annular weights and a tripod/guide. Total apparatus mass = (46 ± 2) kg.
  • Test soles: specified standard soles include:
    • Football stud sole - six plastic studs, Shore A hardness ~96 ± 2.
    • Smooth rubber sole - 150 mm diameter rubber disk with defined resilience and hardness ranges.
    • Dimpled rubber sole - 150 mm disk with 55 dimples and specified material properties.
  • Test pieces: standard specimen size is at least 1 000 mm × 1 000 mm; synthetic turf and needle‑punch samples prepared per EN 12229.
  • Conditioning: minimum 3 hours at laboratory temperature (23 ± 2) °C; site tests use prevailing conditions.
  • Procedure: ensure sole is clean, assemble apparatus, for synthetic turf drop the weighted foot from (60 ± 5) mm then measure; rotate smoothly at nominal 12 r/min until movement ≥ 45°; record maximum torque. Typical protocol uses five measurements spaced ≥ 50 mm apart.
  • Results: report the mean rotational resistance to the nearest Nm and include test details in the test report.

Applications and users

  • Practical uses of EN 15301-1:2007:
    • Performance verification of new and existing sports surfaces (traction and rotational behaviour).
    • Specification and procurement: helping facility owners and specifiers compare surfaces by rotational resistance.
    • Installation quality control and post‑installation assessment for synthetic turf systems.
    • Safety and injury risk assessment (as one input among others when assessing player–surface interaction).
  • Typical users:
    • Test laboratories and certifiers
    • Sports surface manufacturers and installers
    • Facility managers, stadium operators and sports governing bodies
    • Consultants and specifiers for sports facility projects

Related standards

  • Normative reference: EN 12229 - preparation procedure for synthetic turf and needle‑punch test pieces.
  • Related test methods: EN 13036‑4:2003 (pendulum test for slip/skid resistance) is listed in the bibliography and may be relevant for broader surface friction assessment.
