It is an amendment to EN 60335-2-73:2003, aligned with IEC 60335-2-73:2002/A2:2009, ensuring harmonized safety protocols across Europe. This standard addresses the specific safety concerns related to fixed immersion heaters, supplementing the general requirements applicable to household electrical devices under the broader IEC 60335 series.
The amendment was approved on October 1, 2009, with mandatory implementation deadlines for national adoption and withdrawal of conflicting standards to ensure uniform safety regulations among member countries.
Key Topics
Safety Requirements for Fixed Immersion Heaters
The standard defines particular safety conditions that fixed immersion heaters must meet to protect users from electrical hazards, overheating, and other risks specific to equipment installed permanently in water heating systems.User Safety Considerations
It emphasizes safety for vulnerable groups such as children and persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, including those lacking experience or knowledge necessary for safe operation without supervision or instruction.Harmonization with General IEC 60335 Standards
SIST EN 60335-2-73:2003/A2:2010 supplements the Part 1 general safety requirements for household electrical appliances, avoiding conflicts and ensuring comprehensive coverage for immersion heaters’ hazards.Regulatory Compliance and Implementation Deadlines
The amendment mandated national standard adoption by July 1, 2010, and withdrawal of conflicting standards by October 1, 2014, ensuring timely harmonization across Europe.Reference to Related Ergonomic and Thermal Safety Standards
The document incorporates guidance related to thermal safety, referencing ISO 13732-1 for human response assessment to hot surfaces, reinforcing protection against burn hazards.
Applications
Domestic Water Heating Systems
EN 60335-2-73 applies primarily to fixed immersion heaters used within household water heating appliances such as boilers and water tanks where safety and reliability are critical.Safety Certification for Manufacturers
Appliance manufacturers utilize this standard to design and certify immersion heaters that comply with European safety laws, facilitating market access and consumer confidence.Testing and Compliance Verification
Testing laboratories and regulatory bodies apply the standard's requirements for product assessments, ensuring that devices meet prescribed safety thresholds before market entry.Consumer Protection
