What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 16129:2026?
kSIST FprEN 16129:2026 sets the main requirements for design, connections, soundness, performance, testing and marking. In practice, it tells you what the device must withstand, how it must behave in service, and what evidence you need before placing it on the market.
Device type, design basis and construction
Clause 4 classifies the equipment as single stage, two stage or three stage installations, and distinguishes fixed, adjustable and variable regulating devices. Devices with a nominal regulated pressure specified by EN 437:2021 shall be fixed regulating devices.
Clause 5.1 requires the design to take account of the minimum and maximum supply pressure, the nominal regulated pressure and the operating temperature range. It also requires clean internal and external surfaces, no sharp edges, safe routing of holes and gas ways, and threaded joints in accordance with EN 10226-1:2004 or EN 10226-2:2005.
For variable regulators, Clause 5.1 limits adjustment by fixed stops and requires the adjuster to remain in place. That matters because the regulated pressure must stay predictable after commissioning and maintenance.
Connections, sealing and manual controls
Clause 5.3.4 controls the connection subassembly. Seals must be distortable, retained on the device and replaceable without special tools. Annexes G and H define the inlet and outlet connection types, while Annex N gives an alternative seal design for selected flat seals.
The document generally allows only one outlet connection, except for certain outdoor-use regulators covered by Annex K. Manual closing mechanisms are only allowed on regulators or adaptors, and they shall close clockwise. That reduces misuse and keeps the operating direction consistent.
Soundness, endurance and resistance
Clause 5.5 sets soundness requirements for the complete device and for the manual closing mechanism. The leak limit depends on the nominal diameter, and quick-coupling and rotating connections must remain sound in every usable position.
Clauses 5.7 and 5.8 add resistance to humidity changes and corrosion. The complete device, including mounting parts, is tested for corrosion, and the surface condition after testing must not impair correct operation.
Performance under service conditions
Clause 6 requires the operating curves of regulating devices to stay within the defined limits under test conditions. For automatic change-over devices, this applies in both service and reserve positions and for both inlet connections.
Clause 6 also controls lock-up pressure, pressure ranges for fixed or adjustable regulators, and the tolerance of adjustable devices. For adaptors, the pressure loss at the guaranteed flow rate shall stay below the stated limit in Clause 6.4. In practice, these requirements protect appliance performance and help avoid nuisance shut-off or unstable gas supply.
Safety devices and special applications
Annex A covers pressure- and flow-related safety functions such as PRV, OPSO, UPSO, EFV, regulated outlet pressure limiters, two-stage pressure limiting devices, additional diaphragm and in-line monitor. Each type has its own design, performance, test, marking and instructions requirements.
Annex B covers thermal shut off systems. Annex C adds conditioning, marking and instructions for extreme low and high temperature use. Annex D and Annex M add application-specific requirements for caravans, motor caravans and boats, including vibration resistance, special warnings and installation instructions.
Annex K requires low pressure fixed regulators with two or three outlets for outdoor use to have separate closable outlets and a total guaranteed flow rate not above 1,5 kg/h. Annex L covers regulators fitted with an inlet valve and checks that the valve cannot be dismantled inadvertently.
Testing, proof and marking
Clause 7 sets the test methods for impact, pressure resistance, connection strength, valve pad retention, soundness, mechanical endurance, humidity changes, corrosion and performance. It also includes a proof test for devices subject to the Pressure Equipment legislation.
Clause 8 requires marking, packaging and instructions. Packaging must identify the gas type, nominal regulated pressure and limits of use where relevant. The instructions must cover installation, use, maintenance and special warnings for each applicable annex.
What terms does kSIST FprEN 16129:2026 define?
- Regulator - a regulating device that keeps regulated pressure within preset limits over a defined range of upstream pressure, flow rate and temperature.
- Automatic change-over device - a regulating device that automatically switches from a service cylinder to a reserve cylinder when the service supply pressure drops below a defined value.

European foreword
This document (prEN 16129:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 181 “Appliances
and leisure vehicle installations using liquefied petroleum gas and appliances using natural gas for
outdoor use”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 16129:2013.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CEN by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
Member States.
For the relationship with EU Legislation, see informative Annex ZA or Annex ZB, which is an integral part
of this document.
The main changes compared with EN 16129:2013 are as follows:
— harmonization with pressure equipment directive 2014/68/EU. Annex O describes the situation of
regulating devices and adaptors regarding to PED;
— modification of the wording of both paragraphs 5.3.4.3 (Devices with a quick coupling connection)
and 5.3.4.4 (Devices for fitting to a self-closing valve by means of a thread) in order to distinguish
quick coupling connections from devices for fitting to a self closing valve;
— reconsideration of the G.56 connection specifications with the possibility to both connect and
disconnect in “on” position;
— additional tests regarding to marking durability;
— editorial changes (Definition Butane / Propane / LPG, Performance (FR vs UK versions), marking and
instructions);
— harmonization of pressure definitions and symbols with those given in EN 334:2019+A1:2024;
— dynamic resistance corrosion test;
— lock-up pressure test;
— Annex C;
— Annex M;
— rewording of the Annex ZA according to the Gas Appliance Regulation (EU) 2016/426;
— Annex ZB according to the pressure equipment directive 2014/68/EU.
NOTE Gas pressure regulators according to this document do not have their own source of ignition and
therefore are not within the scope of European Directive 2014/34/EU. Any additional components (e.g. proximity
switch, travel transducer etc.) are expected to be independently considered in the framework of assemblies as per
ATEX Guideline “Guideline on the application of Council directive 94/9/EC of 23rd March 1994 edition June 2009”,
Clauses 3.7.3 and 3.7.4.
