1.1   Scope of EN 12309 series
Appliances covered by EN 12309 include one or a combination of the following:
-   gas fired sorption chiller;
-   gas fired sorption chiller/heater;
-   gas fired sorption heat pump.
EN 12309 applies to appliances only when used for space heating and cooling with or without heat recovery.
EN 12309 applies to appliances having flue gas systems of type B and C (according to EN 1749:2020) and to appliances designed for outdoor installations, including type A. EN 12309 does not apply to air conditioners, it only applies to appliances having:
-   integral burners under the control of fully automatic burner control systems;
-   closed system refrigerant circuits in which the refrigerant does not come into direct contact with the water or air to be cooled or heated;
-   mechanical means to assist transportation of the combustion air and/or the flue gas.
The above appliances can have one or more primary or secondary functions (i.e. heat recovery - see definitions in EN 12309-1:2023). In the case of packaged units (consisting of several parts), the standard applies only to those designed and supplied as a complete package.
The appliances having their condenser cooled by air and by the evaporation of external additional water are not covered by this European Standard.
Installations used for heating and/or cooling of industrial processes are not within the scope of these standards.
NOTE   All the symbols given in this text are used regardless of the language used.
1.2   Scope of EN 12309-2
This document deals with the safety of gas-driven sorption heat pumps as defined in EN 12309 1:2023. Only types B12, B13, B22, B23, C12, C13, C32 and C33 and outdoor installations, including type A appliances, are covered in this document. This document does not include specific requirements on surface temperatures of external parts particular to children and elderly people.

This document specifies constructional and performance characteristics, safety specifications and rational use of energy, relevant test methods and marking of independent stoves, side burners, covered burners, open burners, griddles, radiant grills, burning liquefied petroleum gas, referred to in the body of the text as "appliances".
This document covers appliances, used outdoors and operating with the gases of the third family according to EN 437:2018.
Appliances used in leisure vehicles and boats are outside the field of application of this standard.
Independent stove burners, whose nominal heat input is below 1,16 kW, griddles and radiant grills, are not subject to any special requirement concerning the rational use of energy due to their low rate and their use for short periods of time.
This document does not state all requirements for appliances of other nature incorporating a stove (for example barbecues are not covered by this standard but a side burner of a barbecue is covered by this standard).
This document does not cover regulators that are used with those appliances.

This document specifies the construction and performance characteristics related to safety and the rational use of energy of portable appliances burning liquefied petroleum gases at the vapour pressure within the gas cartridge or gas cylinder, excepting those where the gas cartridge is inserted horizontally in the chassis.
NOTE   These appliances are referred to in the body of the text as "appliances".
This document applies to various types of portable appliances burning liquefied petroleum gases at vapour pressure and designed to be used with cartridges as complying with EN 417 or gas cylinders.
This document covers appliances for outdoor or in well ventilated areas uses only.
For example the following types of appliances are covered:
a)   cooking appliances (stoves, grills, barbecues...);
This document does not cover barbecues that can be used indoors;
b)   lighting appliances;
c)   heating appliances;
This document only applies to appliances with a maximum heat input of up to 3 kW (Hs) for outdoor use only;
d)   blowtorches;
This document only applies to blowtorches without a flexible hose;
e)   laboratory burners.
The requirements apply to these appliances or their functional sections whether or not the latter are independent or incorporated into an assembly.
Appliances covered by this document are not connected to a flue for the discharge of products of combustion and are not connected to the mains electricity supply.
This document covers neither appliances supplied with LPG in the liquid phase nor appliance with fixed integral container which may or may not be refilled by the user
It does not apply to lighters as defined in EN ISO 9994.
It does not apply to gas appliances operating with a valve cartridge which is horizontally integrated into the chassis of the appliance also called "flat portable gas stove".
Requirements for rational use of energy have been included for stove burners.
However, such requirements have not been included for the other types of appliances because:
-   for grills and barbecues, this is a type of cooking which is achieved by various means such as radiant elements; in addition this type of cooking varies according to the type of food and region where the appliance is used;
-   for lighting appliances, the consumption is insignificant because these appliances have a very low rate and are used only for a few hours in a year;
-   for heating appliances, all the heat produced is discharged into the environment;
-   for tools such as blowtorches which are not professional tools in regular use, the gas consumption depends very much on the way it is used.

This European Standard specifies, the requirements and test methods concerning the classification and marking of gas-fired central heating boilers that are fitted with atmospheric burners, fan assisted atmospheric burners and are hereafter referred to as 'boilers'.
Where the word boiler is used, this is to be read as the boiler including its connecting ducts, ducts and terminals, if any.
This document is to be used in conjunction with FprEN 15502-1:2021
This European Standard covers gas-fired central heating boilers type B11, B11BS, B12, B12BS, B13, B13BS:
NOTE For further background information on appliance types see EN 1749:2020
a)   that have a nominal heat input (on the basis of net calorific value) not exceeding 70 kW;
b)   that use one or more combustible gases of the three gas families at the pressures stated in EN 437:2018;
c)   where the temperature of the heat transfer fluid does not exceed 105 °C during normal operation;
d)   where the maximum operating pressure in the water circuit does not exceed 6 bar;
e)   which are declared in the technical instructions to be either a 'low temperature boiler' or a 'standard boiler'. If no declaration is given the boiler is to be considered a 'standard boiler';
f)   which are intended to be installed inside a building or in a partially protected place;
g)   which are intended to produce also hot water either by the instantaneous or storage principle, as a single unit.
h)   which are designed for either sealed water systems or for open water systems.
For applications within the scope of the PED further requirements may be necessary (e.g. situations where the maximum allowable temperature exceeds 110 °C, or where volume times maximum allowable pressure is over 50 bar x litres).
NOTE This standard provides requirements for boilers with known constructions. For boilers with any alternative constructions, which might not fully be covered by this standard, the risk associated with this alternative construction needs to be assessed.
An example of an assessment methodology, based upon risk assessment, is given in Clause 11.
This standard does not cover all the requirements for:
i)   appliances that are intended to be connected to gas grids where the quality of the distributed gas is likely to vary to a large extent over the lifetime of the appliance (see Annex AB);
j)   appliances using flue dampers;
k)   appliances that have a nominal heat input (on the basis of net calorific value) exceeding 70 kW;
l)   appliances of the types A, B14, B2, B3, B4, B5 and C;
m)   appliances intended to be connected to a (common) flue having mechanical extraction;
n)   appliances with gas/air ratio control;
o)   modular boilers;
p)   boilers which can give rise to condensation under certain circumstances;
q)   boilers intended to be installed in a room with a foreseeable negative pressure relative to the pressure in the flue system;
r)   surface temperatures of external parts particular to children and elderly people;
s)   appliances that are intended to burn natural gases of the second family where hydrogen is added to the natural gass;
t)   boilers intended to be installed in areas accessible to elderly people and children.
NOTE   Negative pressure relative to the pressure in the flue system can for example be caused by mechanical or thermal ventilation in airtight buildings.
