(Main)Hygrothermal performance of building materials and products - Determination of hygric expansion coefficient
Hygrothermal performance of building materials and products - Determination of hygric expansion coefficient
This standard specifies a procedure for determining the hygric expansion or contraction behaviour of building materials as a function of moisture content. It isapplicable for mineral, porous hygroscopic materials. For other materials showing moisture-induced deformations, the procedure described can be adapted in a suitable way taking into account their specific moisture behaviour. This standard is relevant to material states when reversible expansion/contraction processes, may be assumed, but not states governed by irreversible process such as shrinkage after material production or after initial drying.

General Information
Overview
EN 13009:2000 - a CEN standard - specifies a laboratory procedure to determine the hygric expansion coefficient of building materials and products. The standard addresses the hygrothermal behavior by quantifying expansion or contraction as a function of moisture content. It is aimed primarily at mineral, porous hygroscopic materials, and the method may be adapted for other materials exhibiting moisture-induced deformations. EN 13009:2000 applies where reversible moisture-related dimensional changes can be assumed, and is not intended for irreversible processes (for example, shrinkage after production or initial drying).
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Focus on mineral, porous hygroscopic building materials; adaptation guidance for other materials with moisture-induced deformation.
- Measurement objective: Determination of the hygric expansion coefficient - a parameter relating dimensional change to moisture content.
- Reversibility requirement: Method is applicable to states where expansion/contraction is reversible; excludes irreversible shrinkage stages.
- Test procedure principles: Controlled conditioning of specimens, monitoring of moisture content and dimensional change, and calculation of the hygric expansion as a function of moisture.
- Reporting: Results presented to support hygrothermal assessments, material specifications and quality control (expressed as expansion per moisture change).
Applications
EN 13009:2000 is practical for:
- Material manufacturers assessing dimensional stability of mineral-based products (bricks, mortars, plasters, ceramics).
- Testing laboratories performing hygrothermal characterization for product data sheets and certification.
- Design professionals and architects who need hygric expansion data for detailing and selecting materials in moisture-exposed environments.
- Building physicists and hygrothermal modelers integrating moisture-related dimensional change into simulation and durability analyses.
- Quality control and compliance where specification limits require verified hygric behavior to prevent cracking, deformation or failure in façades, claddings, and internal finishes.
