SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026 is a CLC amendment to IEC 60269-1 for low-voltage fuses. It updates the general requirements for fuse design, marking, installation conditions and test methods used by manufacturers, test laboratories and specifiers of fuse equipment. The amendment also aligns the European text with Low Voltage Directive-related changes and adds technical corrections.

What does SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026 amends Part 1 of IEC 60269, the general requirements for low-voltage fuses. It keeps the Part 1 structure and revises selected clauses on scope notes, references, terms, service conditions, construction and tests.

The scope note points users to separate standards for some special fuse applications, such as rolling stock and high-frequency circuits.

Main clauses covered by the amendment:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 - Conditions for operation in service
  • Clause 8 - Standard conditions for construction
  • Clause 9 - Tests
  • Bibliography

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026?

Design and marking

Clause 3 adds impulse withstand voltage (Uimp) for fuse-holders. In practice, this gives a named insulation limit that designers and test labs can use when checking surge withstand capability.

Clause 8 tightens the link between creepage distances, material group and rated voltage. For readers, that means insulation layout must be checked against both the voltage rating and the insulating material used.

Clause 8 also requires fuse-holders suitable for isolation to carry the same symbol as fuse-disconnectors. This matters because the marking tells installers and buyers that the device can be used as an isolation function.

Service conditions

Clause 4 states that the time-current characteristics are related to a reference ambient air temperature of 20 °C. If a product behaves differently at other temperatures, the correction factors belong in the product documentation.

Clause 4 also notes that vibrations and shock are outside the normal use conditions considered here. In practice, products for harsher environments need separate justification or separate standards.

Test and acceptance rules

Clause 9 updates the acceptability rule for insulation resistance by voltage range. This is important for test reports because the pass criterion changes with the rated voltage of the fuse or fuse-holder.

Clause 9 revises the conductor cross-sectional areas used in power dissipation tests and updates the AC and DC breaking-capacity test settings. It also refines recovery voltage and current-calibration conditions, which affect how interruption tests are set up and repeated.

Clause 9 keeps a service-condition test for contacts left undisturbed. That test checks whether contacts deteriorate in normal service, so it supports durability claims and conformity assessment.

Clause 9 also updates the fire-related material-retention test for insulating parts and points readers to the IEC 60695 glow-wire methods in the bibliography. For users, that links fuse construction to fire behaviour testing.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026 define?

  • Impulse withstand voltage (Uimp) - the highest peak impulse voltage of prescribed form and polarity that a fuse-holder insulation can withstand without breakdown.
  • Fuse-holder suitable for isolation - a fuse-holder that is marked with the same double-opening symbol used for fuse-disconnectors.
  • Time-current characteristics - the operating curves or data that relate current to operating time, with a 20 °C reference in this amendment.
  • Creepage distances - the surface distances in insulation that must match the rated voltage and the material group.
  • Prospective test current - the current used to set up breaking-capacity tests so the fuse is tested under representative arc-energy conditions.
  • Recovery voltage - the voltage maintained across the fuse after operation during interruption testing.
  • Fuse-link - the replaceable fuse element that opens the circuit when overcurrent conditions require interruption.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026?

  • Fuse manufacturers use it to design fuse-links and fuse-holders, set ratings and prepare product documentation.
  • Test laboratories use it to set up type tests, interruption tests and insulation checks.
  • Certification and conformity assessment bodies use it to judge whether test evidence matches the general requirements.
  • Electrical equipment and switchgear manufacturers use it when integrating fuse-holders, isolation functions and wiring arrangements.
  • Designers and specifiers use it when selecting low-voltage fuse equipment for industrial installations and other electrical systems.
  • Buyers and quality managers use it to compare products against the same general technical baseline.

What changed in SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026 is the first amendment to Edition 5.0 of IEC 60269-1. It states that it reflects European-level changes made to meet the Low Voltage Directive requirements and includes minor technical corrections.

The amendment changes the scope note, updates several normative references, adds Uimp, revises service-condition notes, changes construction marking and creepage guidance, and updates test criteria and test setup details.

Which standards are used with SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026?

StandardWhat it contributes
IEC 60947-3:2020/AMD1:2025Symbol and related requirements for fuse-disconnectors and fuse-combination units
IEC 60050-441:1984/AMD1:2020Vocabulary for switchgear, controlgear and fuses

IEC 60695-2-10:2021Glow-wire apparatus and common test procedure mentioned in the bibliography
IEC 60695-2-11:2021Glow-wire flammability test method for end products mentioned in the bibliography

The foreword also lists IEC 60269 parts 2 to 7 as companion parts under the same family title.

What does the SIST EN IEC 60269-1:2025/oprA1:2026 document contain?

The amendment updates clause text, notes and tables rather than adding a full new structure. It revises the test conditions in Clause 9, including the AC and DC breaking-capacity calibration tables and the conductor selection table for power dissipation tests.

It also references Figure 2 and Figure 3 for the factor k, and it updates the service-condition and insulation-related test language so laboratories can apply the revised conditions consistently.
