CEN/TC 228/WG 5 - Heating Systems in Buildings
WG5 is responsible for writing standards for embedded, water based surface heating and cooling systems in buildings. WG5 is responsible for writing standards on methods for determination of the heating and cooling capacity under steady state and dynamic conditions. WG5 is responsible for writing standards on methods for design and dimensioning of such systems. The systems include emitter (embedded pipes, headers), control and distribution. The methods do only take into account closed air gaps and do not apply to systems including open (ventilated) air gaps in the wall, floor or ceiling construction. WG5 standards do not cover heated or cooled panels, which are not embedded in floor, wall or ceiling, but mounted on the surface (these are covered by TC156/WG4). This work is carried out in close cooperation with WGs from different TCs (TC89, TC130, TC156) dealing with load calculation and energy calculation.

General Information
This European Standard is applicable to water based surface heating and cooling systems in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
The methods apply to systems integrated into the wall, floor or ceiling construction without any open air gaps.
The methods do not apply to heated or chilled ceiling panels or beams.
This European Standard provides steady-state calculation methods for determination of the heating and cooling capacity (part 1).
This European Standard estimates an equivalent system resistance to be used in dynamic building simulation programs.
This European Standard applies also, as appropriate, to the use of other fluids instead of water.
A separate standard provides a method for design, dimensioning and installation of the system (part 2).
This European Standard is not applicable for testing or certification of systems.
A separate standard provides a method and guidance on how to optimise the design for use of renewable energy sources and take system dynamic effects into account (part 3).

This standard is part 3 of a series of standards:
- Part 1: Determination of the design heating and cooling capacity;
- Part 2: Design, dimensioning and installation;
- Part 3:Optimizing for use of renewable energy sources.
The aim of the present standard is to give a guide for the design to promote the use of renewable energy sources and to provide a method for the use of Thermo-Active-Building-Systems (TABS).
The method allows calculation of peak cooling capacity of a thermo-active system, based on heat gains (solar, internal loads, ventilation).
This method also allows calculation of the energy demand on the water side (system) to be used for sizing of the cooling system, e.g. chiller, fluid flow rate.
Steady state heating capacity is calculated according to method B or E of prEN 15377-1 (part 1 of this series of standards).

This European Standard is applicable to water based surface heating and cooling systems in buildings as defined in EN 15377-1.
Physiological limitations are taken into account when specifying the maximum and minimum surface temperature. The design is based on performance characteristic curves and limit curves calculated in accordance with EN 15377-1 and EN 1264.
Design considerations for heating and cooling systems are specified.
