CEN/TC 264/WG 31 - Biomonitoring methods with mosses and lichens
WG 31 deals with description of a method of survey of population of epiphytic lichens and of determination of a biological index of epiphytic lichens. This index will allow to assess the biological effects of air quality on ecosystems by means of epiphytic lichens, taking into account the micro-environmental conditions. Furthermore, WG 31 deals with description of a method, using in-situ mosses, for assessing the environmental impregnation by organic and non-organic elements. This method has already been widely used. This standard will allow harmonizing the use of the method in order to compare the results. The method can apply to the localization of pollution sources and dispersion areas at local and regional levels. It also allows the mapping of background pollution at national or global levels.

General Information
This European Standard aims to provide a reliable, repeatable and objective method for assessing epiphytic lichen diversity. According to international literature on the topic (see e.g. [18] for an overall outline), it provides a framework for assessing the impact of anthropogenic intervention, particularly for estimating the effects of atmospheric pollution.

This European Standard describes the sampling protocol and the preparation of samples of in situ mosses to monitor the bioaccumulation of atmospheric contaminants.
This European Standard specifies the actions that shall be taken from the field sampling of mosses to their final preparation before analysis for targeted contaminants.
This European Standard is of interest to all operators wishing to conduct air quality biomonitoring studies.
