Chip and dust extraction systems
Responsible for the drafting of safety standards related to Chip and dust extraction systems for use with woodworking machines acting with the delegated responsibility of CEN/TC 142.
General Information
This document deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in Clause 4, relevant for chip and dust extraction systems for indoor use designated to be connected to woodworking machines, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer, including reasonably foreseeable misuse.
This document does not apply to:
a) extraction systems with a nominal volume flow rate above 8 000 m3 h−1 and/or a volume of the dust loaded part of the dust extractor above 3,5 m3;
b) vacuum cleaners according to EN 60335-2-69;
c) extraction systems with fans installed in the dust loaded part;
d) extraction equipment (e.g. extraction hoods, ducts) within a woodworking machine, i.e. up to and including the outlet to which the extraction system is connected;
e) extraction systems designed for dust with KST values above 200 bar ms−1, minimum ignition energy below 10 mJ and/or lower explosion level below 30 g m−3;
f) extraction systems designed for aspiration of explosive atmospheres, e.g. dust load > 50 % lower explosion level;
g) systems designed for extraction of machines with a higher risk of causing ignition sources.
This document is not applicable to machines which are manufactured before the date of its publication as a European Standard.

This European Standard deals with the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant for chip and dust extraction systems for fixed installation and for connection with machines for working on solid wood (including hard wood) and wood-based materials, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer, including reasonably foreseeable misuse.
This European Standard deals also with the technical requirements to minimize the hazards in connection with the temporary storage of wood dust and chips in a silo, bin or container including charging and discharge systems.
This European standard does not apply to:
a) chip and dust extraction systems with filters installed indoors (covered by prEN 16770);
b) extraction equipment (e.g. extraction hoods, ducts) within a woodworking machine including the outlet to which the extraction system is connected;
c) chip and dust extraction systems designed for KST values above 200 bar ms−1;
d) mechanical conveying systems between filter and storage facility;
e) extraction systems and conveying systems with underpressure below 0,3 bar or overpressure above 0,3 bar;
f) storage devices for pressed wood products (e.g. pellets) and humid shavings.
Requirements for containers are not dealt with in this standard.
This European Standard is not applicable to machines which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN.

This document sets out the safety related performance requirements and specifies the methods for elimination of hazards or the measures that shall be taken to minimise hazards, which cannot be eliminated, on chip and dust extraction systems with fixed installation as defined in 3.1.1 and 3.1.2, for the purpose of this standard, hereinafter referred to as extraction system, connected to woodworking machines, designed to process solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood and also these materials where these are covered with plastic laminate or edgings. The extraction and conveying system operates pneumatically by vacuum and/or pressure between +- 0,3 bar.
This standard does not:
a) apply to fixed installations with an air flow capacity below 6 000 m3h-1 installed indoors;
b) apply to moveable units with an air flow capacity below 6 000 m3h-1;
c) apply to extraction equipment (e.g. extraction hoods, ducts) within a woodworking machine i.e. up to and including the outlet to which the extraction system is coupled;
d) apply to extraction systems connected to machines processing non-wood materials, such as plastic, plastic laminates, metals, glass or stone;
e) deal with the hazards from contact with or inhalation of dusts from wood coated with lacquer, plastic, aluminium and material with high additive contents or similar;
f) deal with shop fresh air supply;
g) apply to chip and dust extraction systems designed for Kst values above 200 bar ms-1;
h) apply to the silo discharge system;
i) cover the hazards related to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) as required by the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC dated 3-5-89.
This document deals with the interaction with the silo discharge system if any.
This document covers the hazards relevant to these machines as stated in Clause 4 document
Directive 94/9/EC concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres can be applicable to the type of machine or equipment covered by this d
