General Information
This document specifies a method for the quantification of four tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) in the total particulate matter of cigarette mainstream smoke with the intense smoking regime specified in ISO 20778 by using reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The quantified TSNAs are: N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), N-nitrosoanatabine (NAT), N-nitrosoanabasine (NAB) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK).

It is not applicable to the determination of water or nicotine-free dry particulate matter when using the extraction procedure specified in ISO 4387:2000, 7.9.1 or the subsequent measurement of water specified in ISO 10362-1 or ISO 10362-2. NOTE The type of analytical smoking machine used could impact the mass of TPM collected on the smoke trap. ISO/TR 19478-2:2015 extends the analysis reported in ISO/TR 19478‑1:2014 and reports additional studies focused on the conclusions i) and j) from that Technical Report. It identifies and assesses factors impacting on the measurement of smoke TPM, NFDPM, nicotine, water, and carbon monoxide yields when increasing the intensity of the puffing regime from that specified in ISO 3308:2000 to the regime specified in Health Canada Method T-115.
