ASTM F1989-05(2020)
(Specification)Standard Specification for Cooking Fire Suppression Blankets
General Information
- Abstract
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the physical and performance requirements for fire suppression blankets used to extinguish accidental fires that occur during cooking. This specification, however, does not apply to cooking fire suppression blankets that: are made from asbestos; have sides of differing appearance, finish or color; have a performance that differs according to which side is used; or are of metallic construction or component. The blankets shall adhere to physical requirements as to size and shape, mass, hand holding devices, appearance and bi-lateral use, and resistance to fraying or tearing. The blankets should also pass tests for flexibility, ease of removal, electrical resistance, and fire performance.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers requirements for cooking fire suppression blankets to extinguish accidental cooking fires.
1.2 This specification does not apply to cooking fire suppression blankets that: are made from asbestos; have sides of differing appearance, finish or color; have a performance that differs according to which side is used; or, are of metallic construction or component.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses after SI units are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.4 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods portion of this specification, Section 4: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

ASTM F1989-05(2020) - Standard Specification for Cooking Fire Suppression Blankets
Overview
ASTM F1989-05(2020) is the internationally recognized standard specification for cooking fire suppression blankets. Published by ASTM International, this document outlines comprehensive physical and performance requirements for fire suppression blankets designed to extinguish accidental cooking fires. The standard ensures that these safety devices are reliable and effective in kitchen fire emergencies, offering clear criteria for manufacturers and quality assurance professionals.
This specification does not address blankets made from asbestos, blankets with sides of differing appearance or function, blankets with metallic components, or those whose performance varies by side. Instead, it ensures consistency, bi-lateral use, and material safety for products aimed at controlling accidental fires in cooking environments.
Key Topics
Physical Requirements
- Blankets must be rectangular or square with each edge no less than 0.91 meters (36 inches).
- Maximum mass should not exceed 2 kg (4.4 lbs).
- Hand holding devices, if provided, must be sturdy, securely sewn, and easily graspable for quick emergency response.
- Both sides of the blanket must have an identical appearance, finish, and color to avoid user confusion during emergencies.
- Resistance to fraying or tearing is mandatory, ensuring the blanket's integrity during and after use.
Performance Criteria
- Flexibility: Must be rollable without permanent deformation.
- Ease of Removal: Designed for fast extraction from packaging (within 4 seconds, no more than 80 Newtons of force required).
- Electrical Resistance: Must achieve a minimum of 1 MΩ to ensure safety during use.
- Fire Suppression Testing: Thoroughly tested on volatile liquids and cooking oil fires to ensure effectiveness. The blanket must extinguish the fire while remaining intact and not ignite.
Marking and Packaging
- Clear instructions for use and mounting, ideally with pictograms for quick reference.
- Product must be instantly identifiable and accessible in an emergency setting.
- Maintenance, inspection, and disposal guidance included with each unit.
- Shipping containers and blankets must be labeled with the ASTM standard, manufacturer information, and product details.
Applications
This standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and quality control professionals involved in the production and distribution of fire suppression blankets intended for kitchen and cooking settings. Key applications include:
- Residential Kitchens: Fire blankets meeting ASTM F1989-05(2020) specifications provide a reliable first line of defense against common stovetop fires.
- Commercial Food Preparation: Restaurants, cafeterias, and institutional kitchens benefit from enhanced safety and compliance with recognized fire safety standards.
- Consumer Product Safety: Retailers and distributors rely on ASTM-compliant blankets to offer consumers trustworthy fire suppression solutions, reducing liability and product recall risks.
Utilizing fire suppression blankets that comply with this ASTM standard supports safer kitchen environments, reduces the risk of fire-related injuries, and helps satisfy local or international regulatory requirements.
Related Standards
Organizations and professionals referencing ASTM F1989-05(2020) for fire blanket safety should also be aware of related standards and regulations, including:
