ABSTRACT
This specification covers two-part paste adhesives for bonding foam core sandwich panels. The adhesive may be used for new production or depot maintenance. The adhesive should be suitable for forming bonds that can withstand long-term exposure to temperatures, and also withstand combinations of stress, temperature, and humidity. The adhesives shall be used for bonding aluminum alloy facing to foam core, inserts, edge attachments, and other components of a foam cored sandwich panel. Materials shall be tested and shall conform to the material requirements, working characteristics; and to the specified values of curing time, temperature, and pressure; mix ratio, storage life, adhesive life, humidity exposure, and salt spray exposure.
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
This specification is intended to provide information on the properties of adhesives, and the test methods required to evaluate adhesives to be used in the production bonding of aluminum alloys to foam core materials for the manufacture of tactical shelters.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers two-part paste adhesives for bonding foam core sandwich panels. The adhesive may be used for new production or depot maintenance. The adhesive should be suitable for forming bonds that can withstand long term exposure to temperatures from −55 to 71°C (−67 to 160°F) and also withstand combinations of stress, temperature, and humidity expected to be encountered in service. The adhesives shall be used for bonding aluminum alloy facing to foam core, inserts, internal aluminum framing members, and other components of a foam cored sandwich panel.

ABSTRACT

Finally, bonded specimens shall be tested and conform to normal-, low-, and high-temperature lap shears, humidity-exposure lap shear, salt-spray exposure lap shear, and normal- and low-temperature floating roller peel strengths.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers sprayable, pigmented liquid primers for use on aluminum alloys that are to be adhesively bonded in the fabrication of honeycomb sandwich panels for tactical shelters. When applied to a properly cleaned surface of aluminum alloy, the primer imparts corrosion resistance and forms a surface suitable for structural bonding using adhesives complying with Specification E865 and for coating with shelter paint finishes.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the requirements for core-splice adhesive for use with nonmetallic honeycomb cores in the fabrication of honeycomb sandwich panels used in relocatable structures. The adhesive shall be thermosetting, of film form, and capable of expanding to several times its original thickness and shall be cured at specific curing time, temperature, and pressure. The adhesive shall be used for new production or depot repair. The adhesive shall be suitable for forming bonds that can withstand long combinations of stress, temperature, and relative humidity expected to be encountered in service. The adhesive shall be used for bonding core segments and for bonding core segments to edge members and to integral members in a honeycomb sandwich panel. The adhesive shall not allow the transfer of water from one part of the panel to another either through or along the line of the adhesive.

ABSTRACT
This specification defines those characteristics that are required of adhesives to be used in the repair of sandwich panels for durable, rigid wall, relocatable structures. It covers two-part epoxy adhesive suitable for bonding aluminum alloy facings to nonmetallic core and core to core in the repair of durable rigid wall, relocatable structures. The adhesive shall be suitable for forming bonds that will withstand exposure to a certain temperature range and high relative humidity and will also withstand the combinations of stress, temperature, and relative humidity that are expected to be encountered in service. The adhesive shall also be suitable for the bonding of panel inserts and edge attachments. The adhesive physical characteristics such as adhesive life, curing, mix ratio, storage life, and mechanical properties shall be observed in order to determine its working characteristics. The following tests shall be conducted to determine certain mechanical properties: tensile lap shear test, flatwise tension test, climbing drum peel test, and durability test.

The adhesive shall be suitable for forming bonds that will withstand exposure to temperatures from −54 °C to 93 °C (−65 °F to 199 °F) and high relative humidity and will also withstand the combinations of stress, temperature, and relative humidity that are expected to be encountered in service. The adhesive shall also be suitable for the bonding of panel inserts and edge attachments.

Standard Test Method for Facing Cleavage of Sandwich Panels

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method determines the cleavage force required to peel stiff facings from the core of sandwich panels, and is used to determine how well the facing is bonded to the core. Test Method D1781 only works well with flexible facings. As a guideline, the cleavage test method would work better on sandwich panels that have facings with a bending stiffness (EI) of greater than approximately 27.3 lb-in2/inch width (3.09 kN·mm 2/mm width). This converts to approximately 0.032 in. (0.81 mm) 6061 T6 aluminum alloy, 0.023 in. (0.57 mm) steel, and 0.046 in. (1.18 mm) fiberglass facings.
