SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 It is important to monitor the anion concentrations and anion contaminants in electrocoat baths. Wet chemical methods are long, tedious, and of questionable accuracy in the ppm range. Ion chromatography offers a fast, convenient and accurate alternative. Since IC analysis of electrocoat bath samples is difficult, the permeates are often analyzed for contaminants. This guide addresses some important considerations for such analyses.

1.1 This guide is used for the determination of nitrate anion in electrocoat bath permeate by use of chemically suppressed and non-suppressed ion chromatography (IC).  
1.2 Other anions, with the exception of phosphate, may be determined in electrocoat bath permeates by use of this guide.

Standard Test Method for Nondestructive Measurement of Dry Film Thickness of Applied Organic Coatings Using an Ultrasonic Coating Thickness Gage

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Many coating properties are markedly affected by the film thickness of the dry film such as adhesion, flexibility, wear, durability, chemical resistance, and hardness. To be able to compare results obtained by different operators, it is essential to measure film thickness carefully.  
5.2 Most protective and high performance coatings are applied to meet a requirement or a specification for the dry-film thickness of each coat, or for the complete system, or both. Coatings must be applied within certain minimum and maximum thickness tolerances in order that they can fulfill their intended function. In addition to potential performance deficiencies, it is uneconomical to apply more material than necessary when coating large areas such as floors and walls.  
5.3 Low readings may occur occasionally on coatings with rough surfaces. The instrument may allow a user adjustment to prevent this.  
5.4 This test method may not be applicable to measure organic coating thickness on all substrates. The instrument's ability to detect a distinct interface between the coating and the substrate may be impeded if the coating and the substrate are of similar composition, density or attenuation or if the coating is non-homogeneous. Verify operation on a known thickness of the coating/substrate combination if these circumstances are thought to exist.  
5.5 Multilayered coatings have many interfaces and the instrument will measure to the interface separating the two most acoustically different materials. Some instruments have the ability to detect and measure the individual layer thicknesses in a multi-layer system.  
5.6 The use of this test method is not necessarily limited by the type of substrate material.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes the use of ultrasonic film thickness gages to measure accurately and nondestructively the dry film thickness of organic coatings applied over a substrate of dissimilar material. Measurements may be made on field structures, on commercially manufactured products, or on laboratory test specimens. These types of gages can accurately measure the dry film thickness of organic coatings on a variety of substrates such as concrete, wood, wallboard, plastic, fiber composites and metal.  
1.2 This test method is not applicable to coatings that will be readily deformable under load of the measuring instrument as the instrument probe is placed directly on the coating surface to take a reading.  
1.3 The effective range of instruments using the principle of ultrasonics is limited by gage design. A thickness range of 8 μm to 7.60 mm (0.3 to 300 mils) has been demonstrated.

Standard Test Method for Carbohydrate Distribution of Cellulosic Materials

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method requires total hydrolysis of carbohydrate material to monosaccharides, and is thus applicable to any cellulosic or related material that undergoes substantial hydrolysis, including cellulose derivatives such as cellulose acetate.  
5.2 The carbohydrate composition of a cellulosic material can be expressed on the basis of the total initial sample, or on the basis of the carbohydrate portion of the sample. The former requires quantitative handling and may require special knowledge of the other components present in order to establish the absolute carbohydrate level or determine individual wood hemicelluloses such as galactoglucomannan, etc. Since the solid portion of purified pulps is almost all carbohydrate (98 + %), the latter basis is often used to express the carbohydrate distribution as a percent.  
5.3 If heated under alkaline conditions, isomeric sugars may begin to appear in the chromatogram. The major impurity present in purified pulps is saccharinic acids. These acidic components, and other anions such as sulfate, carbonate, and acetate are removed by a strong base anion exchange SPE, and would need to be determined separately to get a more exact carbohydrate distribution.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the carbohydrate composition of cellulosic materials such as ground wood meal, chemically refined pulp, mechanical pulps, brownstocks, and plant exudates (gums) by ion chromatography. This test method is suitable for rapid, routine testing of large numbers of samples with high accuracy and precision. For a review of this technique, see Lee (1).2

4.1 With the need to calculate free formaldehyde levels in emulsion polymers, it is necessary to make the determination without upsetting any equilibria that might generate or deplete formaldehyde. This test method provides a means for determining ppm levels of free formaldehyde in emulsion polymers without upsetting existing equilibria.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method is used for the determination of free formaldehyde (HCHO) in emulsion polymers without upsetting existing formaldehyde equilibria. The procedure has been evaluated using acrylic, acrylonitrile-butadiene, carboxylated styrene-butadiene and polyvinyl acetate emulsion polymers. This test method may also be applicable for emulsion polymers of other compositions. The established working range of this test method is from 0.05 to 15 ppm formaldehyde. Emulsion polymers must be diluted to meet the working range.  
1.2 This test method minimizes changes in free formaldehyde concentration that can result from changes in the physical or chemical properties of an emulsion polymer.  
1.3 There are no known limitations to this test method when used in the manner described. The emulsion polymer test specimen must be prepared with a diluent that has a pH similar to that of the emulsion. Use of an inappropriate pH may upset formaldehyde equilibria and result in incorrect formaldehyde levels.

Standard Test Method for Determination of the Weight Percent Individual Volatile Organic Compounds in Waterborne Air-Dry Coatings by Gas Chromatography

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 In using Practice D3960 to measure the volatile organic compound content of waterborne coatings, precision can be poor for low volatile organic compound content air-dry coatings if the volatile organic weight percent is determined indirectly. The present method directly identifies and then quantifies the weight percent of individual volatile organic compounds in air-dry coatings (Note 6). The total volatile organic weight percent can be obtained by adding the individual weight percent values (Note 7).
Note 6: The present method may be used to speciate solvent-borne air-dry coatings. However, since these normally contain high, and often complex, quantities of solvent, precision tends to be better using other methods contained in Practice D3960, where the volatile fraction is determined by a direct weight loss determination.
Note 7: Detectable compounds may result from thermal decomposition in a hot injection port or from reaction with the extraction solvent. If it can be shown that a material is a decomposition product, or is the result of a reaction with the extraction solvent, then results for that compound should be discounted from the volatile measured by Test Method D6886.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method is for the determination of the weight percent of individual volatile organic compounds in waterborne air-dry coatings (Note 1).  
1.2 This method may be used for the analysis of coatings containing silanes, siloxanes, and silane-siloxane blends.  
1.3 This method is not suitable for the analysis of coatings that cure by chemical reaction (this includes two-component coatings and coatings which cure when heated) because the dilution herein required will impede the chemical reaction required for these types of coatings.  
1.4 Precision statistics for this method have been determined for waterborne coatings in which the volatile organic compound weight percent is below 5 percent. The method has been used successfully with higher organic content waterborne coatings and with solventborne coatings (Note 2).  
1.5 This method may also be used to measure the exempt volatile organic compound content (for example, acetone, methyl acetate, t-butyl acetate and p-chlorobenzotrifluoride) of waterborne and solvent-borne coatings. Check local regulations for a list of exempt compounds. The methodology is virtually identical to that used in Test Method D6133 which, as written, is specific for only exempt volatile compounds.  
1.6 Volatile compounds that are present at the 0.005 weight percent level (50 ppm) or greater can be determined. A procedure for doing so is given in Section 9.  
1.7 Volatile organic compound content of a coating can be calculated using data from Test Method D6886 but requires other data (see Appendix X2.)
Note 1: Data from this method will not always provide the volatile organic compound content of a paint film equivalent to EPA Method 24. Some compounds and some semi-volatile compounds may be considered volatile using the GC conditions specified but will not fully volatilize during the one hour at 110°C conditions of EPA Method 24. Some or all of these materials remain in the paint film and therefore are not considered volatile organic compounds according to EPA Method 24. In addition, some compounds may decompose at the high inlet temperature of the GC. However, note the EPA Method 24 has poor precision and accuracy at low levels of volatile organic compounds.
Note 2: This method measures volatile organic compound weight of air-dry coatings directly as opposed to other methods in Practice D3960 which measure the volatile organic compound weight percent indirectly. A direct measurement of the weight percent particularly in low volatile organic compound content waterborne coatings, generally gives better precision. This specification covers requirements for wipe sampling materials that are used to collect settled dusts on surfaces for the subsequent determination of lead. 1.1 This specification covers requirements for wipes that are used to collect settled dusts on surfaces for the subsequent determination of lead.  
1.2 For wipe materials used for the determination of beryllium in surface dust refer to Specification D7707. This is mentioned to insure that users of wipes recognize that there is some relationship between the analytical backgrounds found in wipes and the analyte of interest.

Standard Test Methods for Determining the Biobased Content of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous Samples Using Radiocarbon Analysis

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This testing method provides accurate biobased/biogenic carbon content results to materials whose carbon source was directly in equilibrium with CO2 in the atmosphere at the time of cessation of respiration or metabolism, such as the harvesting of a crop or grass living its natural life in a field. Special considerations are needed to apply the testing method to materials originating from within artificial environments. Application of these testing methods to materials derived from CO2 uptake within artificial environments is beyond the present scope of this standard.  
4.2 Method B utilizes AMS along with Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) techniques to quantify the biobased content of a given product. Instrumental error can be within 0.1-0.5 % (1 relative standard deviation (RSD)), but controlled studies identify an inter-laboratory total uncertainty up to ±3 % (absolute). This error is exclusive of indeterminate sources of error in the origin of the biobased content (see Section 22 on precision and bias).  
4.3 Method C uses LSC techniques to quantify the biobased content of a product using sample carbon that has been converted to benzene. This test method determines the biobased content of a sample with a maximum total error of ±3 % (absolute), as does Method B.  
4.4 The test methods described here directly discriminate between product carbon resulting from contemporary carbon input and that derived from fossil-based input. A measurement of a product’s 14C/12C or 14C/13C content is determined relative to a carbon based modern reference material accepted by the radiocarbon dating community such as NIST Standard Reference Material (SRM) 4990C, (referred to as OXII or HOxII). It is compositionally related directly to the original oxalic acid radiocarbon standard SRM 4990B (referred to as OXI or HOxI), and is denoted in terms of fM, that is, the sample’s fraction of modern carbon. 1.1 This standard is a test method that teaches how to experimentally measure biobased carbon content of solids, liquids, and gaseous samples using radiocarbon analysis. These test methods do not address environmental impact, product performance and functionality, determination of geographical origin, or assignment of required amounts of biobased carbon necessary for compliance with federal laws.  
1.2 These test methods are applicable to any product containing carbon-based components that can be combusted in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. The overall analytical method is also applicable to gaseous samples, including flue gases from electrical utility boilers and waste incinerators.  
1.3 These test methods make no attempt to teach the basic principles of the instrumentation used although minimum requirements for instrument selection are referenced in the References section. However, the preparation of samples for the above test methods is described. No details of instrument operation are included here. These are best obtained from the manufacturer of the specific instrument in use.  
1.4 Limitation—This standard is applicable to laboratories working without exposure to artificial carbon-14 (14C). Artificial 14C is routinely used in biomedical studies by both liquid scintillation counter (LSC) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) laboratories and can exist within the laboratory at levels 1,000 times or more than 100 % biobased materials and 100,000 times more than 1% biobased materials. Once in the laboratory, artificial 14C can become undetectably ubiquitous on door knobs, pens, desk tops, and other surfaces but which may randomly contaminate an unknown sample producing inaccurately high biobased results.
