Standard Specification for Industrial and Commercial Horizontal Slide Gates

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the material, design, and dimensional requirements for horizontal slide chain link fence gates, gate posts, and other accessories and components for industrial and commercial applications. The horizontal slide gates covered here shall be of the following types: Type I—overhead slide gates that are supported only from above; and Type II—cantilever slide gates spanning an opening lacking a top or bottom support within that opening. Furthermore, Type II gates shall be supplied in any of the two classes as follows: Class 1— steel frame gates and aluminum frame gates using external rollers; and Class 2— frame gates and aluminum frame gates using internal rollers. Gates of either type and class shall conform to material and manufacture requirements specified for zinc-coated steel frames, aluminum alloy gate frames, polymer-coated steel or aluminum frames, chain link gate fabric, barbed wire top, and barbed tape. Type I gates shall additionally meet the specified requirements for materials and manufacture, shape and size, dimension and weight, gate posts, gate support members, roller assembly, gate extensions, and gate extension bracing. Conversely, Type II gates shall additionally meet the specified requirements for shape and size, gate posts, guide posts (for Class 1 only), roller assembly (external and internal rollers, top roller guards, and bottom protective plates), performance criteria, field adjustment, and latching.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers detailed requirements for rolling, cantilever and overhead slide gates, gate posts, and accessories for industrial and commercial applications.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM F1184-23e1: Standard Specification for Industrial and Commercial Horizontal Slide Gates outlines comprehensive material, design, and dimensional requirements for horizontal slide chain link fence gates, gate posts, and their associated accessories. Developed by ASTM International, this standard addresses critical safety, performance, and durability aspects of gate systems used in industrial and commercial settings, ensuring consistent quality and reliable operation across various installations. The specification covers overhead slide gates, cantilever slide gates, and rolling gates, with detailed requirements for each type and class.

Key Topics

  • Gate Types and Classes

    • Type I: Overhead Slide Gates - Supported only from above, for spans requiring overhead support.
    • Type II: Cantilever Slide Gates - Spanning openings with no top or bottom support, subdivided into:
      • Class 1: External rollers
      • Class 2: Internal rollers
    • Type III: Rolling Gates - Supported on-grade across the full gate opening.
  • Material and Manufacturing Requirements

    • Zinc-coated steel, aluminum alloys, and polymer-coated materials for gate frames, ensuring corrosion resistance and strength.
    • Welded, bolted, or riveted construction methods allowed, with requirements for matching durability of adjoining fences.
    • Gate fabric, barbed wire, and barbed tape specifications aligned with relevant ASTM standards.
  • Design and Performance Criteria

    • Minimum structural requirements for gate frames, posts, supports, and accessories.
    • Safety features such as roller guards and positive stops to prevent over-travel and entrapment hazards.
    • Specific requirements for bracing, gate extensions, and performance under load and wind conditions.
    • Field adjustment and installation guidelines to ensure correct function.

Applications

ASTM F1184-23e1 is widely used for the specification, procurement, and installation of horizontal slide gates in diverse industrial and commercial environments. Typical applications include:

  • Perimeter security for factories and warehouses
  • Vehicle entry and exit controls at commercial properties
  • Critical infrastructure fencing such as utilities, airports, and public facilities
  • Automated gate systems requiring compliance with safety standards

Installers, contractors, and facility managers rely on this standard to ensure that horizontal slide gates deliver dependable security, maintain safe operations, and integrate with existing fencing and automation infrastructure. Proper adherence to ASTM F1184-23e1 safeguards against premature wear, operational issues, and non-compliance with regulatory requirements.

Related Standards

Integrating ASTM F1184-23e1 into gate and fence projects often involves reference to these supporting ASTM standards:

  • ASTM A780: Practice for Repair of Damaged and Uncoated Areas of Hot-Dip Galvanized Coatings
  • ASTM B221: Specification for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Extruded Bars, Rods, Wire, Profiles, and Tubes
  • ASTM F567: Practice for Installation of Chain-Link Fence
  • ASTM F1043: Specification for Strength and Protective Coatings on Steel Industrial Fence Framework
  • ASTM F1083: Specification for Pipe, Steel, Hot-Dipped Zinc-Coated (Galvanized), Welded, for Fence Structures
  • ASTM F2200: Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction
