SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This guide identifies U.S., Canadian and other international test methods used in the process of determining and evaluating textile and apparel care label instruction effectiveness for properties such as colorfastness, susceptibility to damage due to retained bleaching agents, dimensional stability, safe ironing temperatures and appearance retention (see 1.5 for exclusions).  
4.2 This guide is intended for general use by those who wish to compare care label evaluation methods of the United States with those of both The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB).  
4.3 The inclusion of AATCC, ASTM, CGSB, and ISO test methods provides broad reference information.  
4.4 Consult specific ASTM textile fabric, apparel and home furnishing performance specifications for evaluation criteria.  
4.4.1 A listing of all ASTM textile performance specifications may be found in Volumes, 07.01 and 07.02 of the Annual Book of ASTM Standards. These textile specifications are appropriate for apparel or textile products that have not been wet processed or dyed after the product was sewn into its final form.

Standard Specification for Mineral Spirits (Petroleum Spirits) (Hydrocarbon Dry Cleaning Solvent)

ABSTRACT
This specification covers hydrocarbon solvents, normally petroleum distillates, used in coatings and dry-cleaning industries. These solvents are also known as mineral spirits and as Stoddard solvents when used in dry cleaning. The following are the types of mineral spirits: Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, Class A, Class B, and Class C. The physical and chemical properties of mineral spirits shall conform to the requirements specified for: aromatic content, commercial reference, appearance, flash point, color, kauri-butanol value, bromine number, odor, doctor test, distillation, residue for distillation, copper corrosion, and apparent specific gravity. These properties shall be tested with the specified test methods.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers four types of hydrocarbon solvents, normally petroleum distillates, used primarily in the coatings and dry-cleaning industries. “Mineral spirits” is the most common name for these solvents. They are also called “Stoddard Solvents” when used for dry cleaning.

Standard Test Method for Energy Performance of Powered Open Warewashing Sinks

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The energy input rate test is used to confirm that the powered sink is operating properly prior to further testing.  
5.2 Preheat energy and time can be useful to food service operators to manage power demands and to know how quickly the powered sink can be ready for operation when filled with cold water.
Note 2: It is typically recommended that powered sinks be filled with hot water prior to use. This test is useful for operations that have a limited supply of domestic hot water and would need to use cold water to fill the sink to capacity.  
5.3 Idle energy rate and pilot energy rate can be used to estimate energy consumption during standby periods.  
5.4 Washing cycle energy consumption can be used by the food service operator to estimate energy consumption during operating periods.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method evaluates the energy consumption of powered open warewashing sinks. The food service operator can use these tests to evaluate and select a suitable washing device and understand its energy consumption.  
1.2 This test method applies to powered open warewashing sinks (powered sinks) with the following characteristics: a large main water sink with electrically powered water pump(s) and multiple high flow water nozzles. The unit may include gas or electric heaters to maintain water temperature. These powered sinks are designed to run for predetermined cycle duration and accommodate pots and pans of various shapes and sizes as well as cooking utensils. They are intended for stand alone use and require little supervision. The powered sink will be tested for the following (where applicable):  
1.2.1 Maximum energy input rate (10.2),  
1.2.2 Preheat energy consumption and duration (10.3),  
1.2.3 Idle energy rate (10.4),  
1.2.4 Pilot energy rate, if applicable (10.5), and  
1.2.5 Washing cycle energy consumption (10.6).
Note 1: This test method applies only to the powered portion of the unit. Other compartments (sanitizing, rinsing, and so forth) are not evaluated.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This guide is intended for use by employees of the end user, such as safety personnel or program administrators, who have chosen to implement a home-laundered flame resistant or arc rated clothing program.  
5.2 This guide describes the key components involved in the home care and maintenance of flame resistant or arc rated clothing. The decision to home launder flame resistant or arc rated clothing is part of an overall hazard analysis. It should include the nature of the hazard, the soils, and any chemicals present in the workplace. Conditions may exist that require work apparel to be cleaned at work or professionally due to the risk of contamination of the home or waste water caused by the wearer’s on-the-job exposure.  
5.3 The guide provides the end user assistance to follow laundering methods that will clean the garment and maintain the flame resistant or arc rated characteristics of the clothing during its useful service life. The guide also provides suggestions for increasing the wear life, appearance, and function of the clothing.  
5.4 The guide also provides suggestions as to when flame resistant or arc rated garments should be removed from service.  
5.5 The guide provides direction on proper garment repair, modification, and permanent removal from service.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide provides recommendations for home laundering of clothing that is flame resistant or arc rated. These recommendations address the home laundering process. Home laundering is an effective cleaning process for flame resistant or arc rated garments; follow all label care instructions.  
1.1.1 This guide does not apply to industrial laundering of flame resistant or arc rated clothing. For more information on industrial laundering, follow Guide F1449 or contact your garment supplier.  
1.1.2 This guide does not apply to dry cleaning of flame resistant or arc rated clothing. For more information on dry cleaning, follow label instructions or contact your garment supplier or fabric manufacturer. Dry cleaning indicates cleaning by a professional dry cleaner.  
1.2 The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends leaving clothing soiled with hazardous chemicals at work to be laundered by the employer or, if such clothing is washed at home, to launder separately from the family wash.  
1.3 It is important that potentially flammable contaminants are removed from garments during the wash process. If flammable contaminants are not removed, the flame resistance of the garment may be compromised. Effective cleaning and proper maintenance of the protective characteristics of flame resistant or arc rated clothing should include consideration of cleaning, repair, and replacement.  
1.3.1 To reduce the potential of employees wearing garments contaminated with flammable substances, the end user should analyze the soil conditions to which a wearer may be exposed, along with the effectiveness of the wash procedure. If it is deemed ineffective, effective solutions should be pursued (dry cleaning, industrial laundry, surfactants, disposable FR coveralls, etc.).  
1.4 It is important that the processes and materials used to launder flame resistant garments are compatible with the FR materials to ensure that the FR protection of the garment is not compromised during the laundering process.  
1.5 It is the responsibility of the end user to determine if their laundering method is the appropriate care and maintenance procedure for their application. (See Appendix X1 and X1.1.)  
1.6 This guide does not apply to specialized protective garments such as specialized firefighter turnout gear and proximity firefighter ensembles.

SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers the use of oil spill dispersants to assist in the control of oil spills. The guide is written with the goal of minimizing the environmental impacts of oil spills; this goal is the basis on which the recommendations are made. Aesthetic and socioeconomic factors are not considered, although these and other factors are often important in spill response.  
1.2 Spill responders have available several means to control or clean up spilled oil. Chemical dispersants should be given equal consideration with other spill countermeasures.  
1.3 This is a general guide only. Oil, as used in this guide, includes crude oils and refined petroleum products. Differences between individual dispersants or between different oil products are not considered. The dispersibility of the oil with the chosen dispersant should be evaluated.  
1.4 The guide is organized by habitat type, for example, small ponds and lakes, rivers and streams, and land. It considers the use of dispersants primarily to protect habitats from impact (or to minimize impacts).  
1.5 This guide applies only to freshwater and other inland environments. It does not consider the direct application of dispersants to subsurface waters.  
1.6 In making dispersant use decisions, appropriate government authorities should be consulted as required by law.  
1.7 This guide does not address getting regulatory approval.

Standard Test Method for Drying Shrinkage of Mortar Containing Hydraulic Cement

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This test method establishes a selected set of conditions of temperature, relative humidity and rate of evaporation of the environment to which a mortar specimen of stated composition shall be subjected for a specified period of time during which its change in length is determined and designated “drying shrinkage.”  
4.2 The drying shrinkage of mortar as determined by this test method has a linear relation to the drying shrinkage of concrete made with the same cement and exposed to the same drying conditions.4 Hence this test method may be used when it is desired to develop data on the effect of a hydraulic cement on the drying shrinkage of concrete made with that cement.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method determines the change in length on drying of mortar bars containing hydraulic cement and graded standard sand.  
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. When combined standards are referenced, the selection of measurement system is at the user’s discretion subject to the requirements of the referenced standard.
