Overview
ASTM C1032-18: Standard Specification for Woven Wire Plaster Base establishes the requirements for woven wire mesh products designed as a base for gypsum or Portland cement-based plaster. Developed by ASTM International, this specification addresses both flat and self-furring types of plaster base, with or without stiffener wires and factory-attached water-resistive barriers. The standard supports safe, effective, and durable installations in residential, commercial, and industrial construction.
Woven wire plaster base products covered by this standard are galvanized for corrosion resistance and must meet defined criteria for mesh size, wire diameter, weight, and physical properties. These bases provide mechanical support for plaster, ensuring proper adhesion and system longevity in interior and exterior wall and ceiling assemblies.
Key Topics
- Product Types: The specification covers both flat and self-furring woven wire plaster bases, with optional features such as stiffener wires and backing (factory-attached water-resistive barriers).
- Material Requirements: The wire used must be zinc-coated (galvanized) per ASTM A641/A641M, ensuring corrosion resistance and long service life.
- Backing & Water-Resistive Barriers: Where provided, the backing meets requirements for lapping and tensile strength, facilitating effective installation and protection against moisture intrusion.
- Dimensions & Tolerances: Requirements specify mesh opening sizes, minimum weights, and tolerances for width, length, and wire diameter, ensuring product consistency.
- Physical Properties: Includes minimum tensile breaking strength for the water-resistive barrier and lapping provisions to support plaster embedment and performance.
- Inspection & Certification: The standard outlines procedures for inspection, rejection, certification, packaging, and marking, helping stakeholders verify compliance.
Applications
Woven wire plaster base specified under ASTM C1032-18 is widely used in:
- Stucco Systems: Serving as a base for Portland cement plaster (stucco) on exterior walls, enabling proper bonding and crack resistance.
- Gypsum Plaster Applications: Providing support for interior plasters in renovation and new construction, including ceilings and partition walls.
- Water-Resistive Barrier Integration: Self-furring mesh with factory-attached water-resistive barriers streamlines installation and enhances moisture protection, critical in exterior wall assemblies.
- Complex Surfaces: Flexible mesh adapts to curved or irregular surfaces, supporting creative architectural designs.
- Fire and Moisture Control: When used with compliant backings, the system meets key performance goals for fire resistance and water repellency in building envelopes.
The standard ensures products reliably meet performance criteria, supporting safe and sustainable building practices in a range of environments.
Related Standards
Several other national and international standards complement or are referenced within ASTM C1032-18, including:
- ASTM A641/A641M: Specification for Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Carbon Steel Wire, which describes the galvanizing requirements for wires used in plaster base products.
- ASTM C11: Terminology Relating to Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems, for consistent definitions throughout the industry.
- ASTM E2556/E2556M: Specification for Vapor Permeable Flexible Sheet Water-Resistive Barriers, relevant for water-resistive backing materials.
- Federal Specification UU-B-790a: Covers Kraft building paper used as backing.
- Federal Specification UU-P-31 B/171: Establishes tensile breaking strength tests for backing materials.
Adherence to ASTM C1032-18 helps contractors, builders, and designers ensure plaster installations perform to expectation, offering durability, protection, and compliance with recognized building codes.
