Overview

FprEN 13075-1 is a draft European Standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) that focuses on the determination of the breaking value of cationic bituminous emulsions using the mineral filler method. This standard provides a detailed test method for assessing the breaking behaviour, which is essential in evaluating how quickly and reliably cationic bituminous emulsions lose their emulsion state upon contact with mineral fillers. Proper determination of breaking value is crucial for manufacturing and quality control of bituminous binders used in road construction and maintenance.

Important Note: The implementation of this standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. Users are responsible for identifying risks, adhering to safe working practices, and complying with regulatory limitations.

Key Topics

  • Breaking Value of Cationic Bituminous Emulsions: The standard details a laboratory procedure to determine the breaking value (BV), defined as the mass of reference filler required to coagulate 100g of emulsion.
  • Test Methods: Provides both semi-automatic and manual procedures for BV determination, with precise requirements on equipment and conditions.
  • Reference Fillers: Specifies three types of standard fillers (Forshammer SE, Q92, Sikaisol), including physical and chemical properties, such as particle size distribution and composition.
  • Reproducibility and Precision: Guidance on repeatability and reproducibility, including performance criteria based on collaborative testing within CEN/TC 336.
  • Test Reporting: Outlines mandatory reporting elements to ensure consistency and traceability, including sample identification, test procedure, filler type, results, and any deviations.

Applications

The procedures defined in FprEN 13075-1 are of substantial practical value in the construction and maintenance industry:

  • Road Construction and Asphalt Technology: Enables precise control of bituminous emulsion properties, ensuring predictable breaking behaviour when applying surfacing, tack coats, or surface dressings.
  • Quality Assurance: Laboratories and producers use this standard to verify that their cationic bituminous emulsions meet performance specifications for rapid, medium, or slow breaking grades.
  • Comparative Product Testing: By providing conversion factors among different reference fillers, FprEN 13075-1 allows for harmonized performance assessments of various emulsion formulations and types.
  • Research and Development: Facilitates innovation within bituminous materials by standardizing a key test for new binder and emulsion recipes.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assists industry stakeholders in meeting national and European requirements for bituminous binders, supporting market access and contract fulfillment.

Related Standards

FprEN 13075-1 complements a broader suite of standards related to bitumens and bituminous binders, including:

  • EN 58: Bitumen and bituminous binders - Sampling bituminous binders
  • EN 12594: Preparation of test samples for bitumens and bituminous binders
  • EN 12597: Standard terminology for bitumens and bituminous binders
  • EN 1430: Determination of particle polarity of bituminous emulsions
  • EN 13075-2: Determination of fines mixing time of cationic bituminous emulsions
  • EN 933-1 & EN 933-10: Tests for geometrical properties of aggregates, including particle size distribution and grading of filler aggregates

By adhering to FprEN 13075-1, laboratories, manufacturers, and engineers ensure a high standard of quality and reliability for bituminous emulsions, improving performance and durability in European road infrastructure. This standard is a vital reference for anyone involved in bitumen testing, asphalt production, and quality management in the road construction sector.

This document (prEN 13075-1:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 336 “Bitumens
and bituminous binders”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document will supersede EN 13075-1:2016.
prEN 13075-1:2025 includes the following significant changes with respect to EN 13075-1:2016:
a) Clause 5, “Reagents and materials”: in paragraph 5.1 the naming “Caolin” for the Q92 filler, which
could lead to confusion with the mineralogical nature of kaolin, has been removed;
b) Clause 6, “Apparatus”, has been updated and revised, standardizing the use of the metrological
concept of “maximal permissible measurement error” for describing the measurement precision;
c) in paragraph 6.2.2, the description of the stirrer has been clarified;
d) Annex A, “Characteristics of the reference fillers”: the Sikaisol filler, which production has been
disrupted, has been downgraded to the third place in the reference fillers list;
e) in paragraph A2 the particle size distribution envelope of the Q92 filler has been updated and
tightened, thanks to the to process improvements brought by the producer.

3.1
breaking value
BV
dimensionless number corresponding to the mass of reference filler, in grams, needed to coagulate 100 g
of bituminous emulsion
4 Principle
A reference filler is added at a uniform rate to a specified quantity of stirred cationic bituminous emulsion.
When the emulsion has completely broken, the mass of added filler is determined by weighing. The mass
of filler (in grams), multiplied by 100 and divided by the mass of emulsion (in grams), is the breaking
value (3.1).
NOTE The cationic or anionic nature of an emulsion can be determined with EN 1430 [1].
