Overview

EN 16058:2012 - published by CEN - specifies a long‑term dynamic rig test method to determine nickel release from nickel layers or coatings containing nickel on surfaces of products intended to contact drinking water. The procedure simulates domestic distribution conditions with alternating flow and stagnation and provides time‑based nickel release data over a 26‑week operation period. It is intended for assessing surface coatings (intentional or incidental nickel films) rather than nickel released from bulk materials.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test duration: 26 weeks of controlled operation.
  • Test rig & samples: Constructed per Annex A; endpoint devices (e.g., taps) tested in five lines (one sample per line); in‑line devices (e.g., valves) tested as 15 samples across at least three lines. A control line made from inert material is required.
  • Flow regime and sampling: Alternating flow and stagnation cycles are used; representative water samples are taken after 4 hours stagnation at specified operation periods to build run‑time curves of nickel concentration.
  • Environmental parameters: Room temperature (20 ± 5) °C; test water temperature 10–25 °C; flow rate (5 ± 0.5) L/min. Test water supply must sustain ≥1.5 bar.
  • Test water quality: Use local drinking water; upstream nickel < 10 µg/L. Parameters pH, conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen must be recorded at least four times per day; other water chemistry parameters per EN 15664‑1 Annex C.
  • Preconditioning: New rigs require a minimum one‑week conditioning run (dummy lines or free outlets).
  • Sampling & analysis: Metal samples must be acidified (pH < 2) for analysis. Short interruptions <3 days permitted, but no sampling for five days after restart.
  • Scope limit: Method targets nickel layers or nickel‑containing coatings. For nickel release from bulk materials, EN 15664 series applies.

Applications and who uses it

EN 16058:2012 is used to:

  • Evaluate nickel release from chrome‑plated sanitaryware, taps, valves and other water fittings.
  • Support product conformity assessment, risk evaluation and regulatory compliance for materials in contact with drinking water.
  • Provide test data for manufacturers (plating lines), independent testing laboratories, water utilities, certification bodies and regulators assessing material suitability for potable water systems.

Typical users:

  • Manufacturers of sanitary fittings and valves
  • Plating and surface‑coating process engineers
  • Accredited testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
  • Water quality engineers and public health regulators

Metal release from the bulk material depends on the composition of the material. The bulk material can release metals for a long period. This long term behaviour depends on the formation of protective layers of corrosion products on the surface of the material. It is possible to test materials to assess their behaviour in releasing metals from the bulk material (EN 15664-1 and -2) so that products made of accepted materials do not have to be tested for this characteristic. The metal release from metal layers due to coating or other production processes depends on the characteristics of those processes. Therefore products must be tested for metal release due to the presence of films or layers on the surface of products. The test method given in this standard is designed to provide information on nickel release over time from surfaces of products having a coating containing nickel which are in contact with drinking water. This nickel coating may be added intentionally or part formed unintentionally i.e. it might appear due to electrostatic conditions in the process. For testing nickel release caused by the bulk material the test procedure according to EN 15664-1 and -2 is required.
This test is based on EN 15664-1, Influence of metallic materials on water intended for human consumption  Dynamic rig test for assessment of metal release  Part 1: Design and operation. It includes alternating periods of once-through flow and stagnation in a rig, simulating the conditions in a domestic distribution system.
For the commonly used chrome plating process of sanitary tap ware, preliminary research indicates that the water composition does not significantly influence the release of nickel from such surface nickel layers. The use of this method in product testing might give more information about the influence of water composition. If this test method is used to measure the release of other metals it must be taken into account that the water composition has a strong influence on the results.
