Overview
EN 1007-1:2002 - "Advanced technical ceramics - Ceramic composites - Methods of test for reinforcement - Part 1: Determination of size content" is a CEN standard that defines a solvent-extraction test method for measuring the size content (sizing) on ceramic fibres. The standard covers common ceramic fibre types such as silicon carbide, silicon nitride, silicon carbon‑nitride, alumino‑silicate, alumina and silicon oxide fibres. Carbon fibres are excluded (see EN ISO 10548).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Quantify the mass fraction of sizing applied to ceramic fibres, reported as a percentage of the conditioned fibre mass.
- Specimens: At least three test specimens per elementary unit; minimum specimen mass 2 g; handle with gloves or tweezers.
- Conditioning: Store and condition specimens using atmospheres defined in EN ISO 291; any pre‑drying protocol should be agreed between supplier and customer.
- Apparatus: High‑precision balance (0.1 mg), controlled oven (±5 °C), desiccator, thimble (~25 × 65 mm), reflux extractor with condenser, heating device, boiling flask, cutting blade, gloves/tweezers.
- Solvent extraction: Use an organic solvent appropriate to the sizing (examples: 2‑butanone/MEK, THF, DMF, dichloromethane, acetone, dichloroethane, or water). Perform reflux extraction; typical reflux rate specified is 5 cycles/hour and extraction time determined by preliminary trials to ensure complete removal of size.
- Drying and weighing: Dry thimble (1 h at 105 ±5 °C) before initial weighing. After extraction dry the desized specimen in the oven (1 h at 110 ±5 °C or 10 °C above solvent boiling point if higher), cool in a desiccator and weigh to 0.1 mg. Repeat drying/weighing until successive weights differ by less than 0.2 mg.
- Calculation: Size content SC (%) = [(M1 – (M3 – M2)) / M1] × 100, where M1 = weight of dried test specimen, M2 = weight of dried thimble, M3 = weight of thimble plus desized specimen. Report the arithmetic mean of the three specimens.
- Reporting: Test report must include identification, reference to EN 1007‑1, fibre description, extraction conditions (solvent, temperature, duration), measured size content and any relevant comments.
Applications and users
- Quality control laboratories in ceramic fibre and composite manufacturing - to verify sizing levels for handling and processing performance.
- Suppliers and customers - to agree acceptance criteria and confirm compliance with contractual specifications.
- R&D and materials characterization teams - for comparing sizing chemistries and their effect on composite processing.
- Certification bodies and auditors - as a standardized, traceable test method for product documentation.
