Overview
EN 13843:2009 - Roller sports equipment - Inline‑skates - Safety requirements and test methods (CEN) specifies safety requirements, test methods, marking and manufacturer information for inline‑skates intended for users with a body mass >20 kg and <100 kg. The standard aims to reduce injury risk to users and third parties during normal use. Inline‑skates for riders under 20 kg are outside the scope (considered toys) and roller skates are covered by EN 13899. The standard is a mandatory reference for manufacturers and test laboratories seeking compliance with CEN requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & classification
- Class A: user mass >20 kg up to 100 kg.
- Class B: user mass >20 kg up to 60 kg and foot length ≤ 260 mm.
- General safety requirements
- Protruding components and edges must be deburred or designed to prevent injury.
- Binding elements (straps, buckles) must prevent unintentional disconnection.
- Chassis (supports, axles, wheels, bearings, fixings) must resist impact, constant and static loads and be secured against unintentional loosening.
- Wheels & traction
- Wheels must be made from non‑slip material; measured coefficient of adhesion µ0 ≥ 0.3 (adhesion test specified).
- Axles & bearings
- Axles must not loosen, displace or deform under test; bearings must remain functional and serviceable.
- Starting / braking devices
- Must be unbreakable, secured against accidental loosening and not impede motion; ground clearance required between 7 mm and 17 mm.
- Fasteners
- Self‑locking nuts must maintain thread contact; user information must warn if effectiveness can be lost.
- Testing protocols
- Test specimens, conditioning (temperature and humidity), and the required last (non‑flexible, correct size).
- Specific tests: wheel adhesion, horizontal frontal impact on front wheel (Class A: ≥135 J at ~4.5 m/s; Class B: ≥90 J at ~3.75 m/s), vertical impact on braking device (Class A: ≥50 J; Class B: ≥30 J), continuous drum test (drum ≥0.5 m/s, force 600 N class A / 400 N class B, duration ≥3 h) and loosening/attachment tests.
Applications and who uses it
- Product designers and manufacturers of inline‑skates (design validation and CE compliance).
- Independent test laboratories performing conformity and safety testing.
- Quality managers, retailers and procurement teams validating product safety claims.
- Regulators and standards bodies referencing CEN safety requirements.
- Useful for servicing/maintenance instructions and consumer safety information.
