Overview

EN ISO 11812:2024/A1:2024 is Amendment 1 to ISO 11812:2020, published by CEN in 2024. It updates the international standard for small craft - watertight or quick‑draining recesses and cockpits, clarifying definitions, measurement methods and minimum dimensional requirements. The amendment was approved by CEN (12 August 2024) and aligns the European implementation with the ISO text. It also identifies the relationship with EU Directive 2013/53/EU and provides a voluntary means to claim conformity for relevant essential requirements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Updated terminology and definitions - Clarifies entries such as recess open to the sea, recess retention height, and notes that design categories and fully loaded condition are defined by ISO 12217 and ISO 8666 respectively.
  • Measurement conventions - Specifies how to measure recess bottom height (H_B) above the reference waterline for single‑ and multi‑bottom recesses and updates references to hull dimensions per ISO 8666.
  • Recess retention height - Introduces a quantitative definition: the horizontal plane below which the sum of open areas to the outside exceeds a threshold related to the recess bottom area (expressed in the amendment as A/(L·B)).
  • Companionway sill and quick‑draining requirements - Revises minimum companionway sill heights and minimum recess bottom heights for quick‑draining recesses, with cross‑references to tables in the standard; exemptions apply for recesses with reduced flooding risk.
  • Watertightness testing - Confirms that test procedures for watertightness degrees are handled by ISO 12216.
  • Cross‑discipline limits - Emphasizes that this standard does not guarantee stability or buoyancy effects of retained water; those are addressed in ISO 12217‑1/2/3.

Practical applications and users

This amendment is essential for:

  • Naval architects and boat designers applying consistent rules for cockpit/recess geometry and drainage
  • Boatbuilders and component manufacturers (hatches, scuppers, drains, portlights)
  • Conformity assessment bodies, test laboratories and classification societies verifying compliance
  • National standards bodies and regulators implementing EU Directive conformity routes Use cases include design reviews, product specification, type approval, CE/UKCA conformity documentation and safety assessments of flooding/drainage behavior.

Related standards

  • ISO 8666 - Small craft: principal data (dimensions, loading)
  • ISO 12216 - Windows, portlights, hatches: strength and watertightness tests
  • ISO 12217‑1 / ‑2 / ‑3 - Stability and buoyancy assessment and categorization
  • ISO 9093 - Seacocks and through‑hull fittings

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
