Overview

EN 14516:2015/prA1:2017 - Baths for domestic purposes is a CEN standard that specifies requirements, test methods and conformity assessment procedures for baths used for domestic and personal hygiene. The standard ensures that, when installed and maintained per the manufacturer's instructions, baths meet essential performance criteria for cleanability and durability. It applies to all sizes and shapes of baths but excludes baths intended for medical provisions. Annex A provides a list of material characteristics commonly used for manufacturing baths.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and application
    • Applies to baths used in homes, hotels, student accommodation, hospitals and similar buildings (domestic purposes).
    • Not applicable to baths with specific medical provisions.
  • Performance requirements
    • Clear focus on cleanability and durability as essential characteristics.
    • Requirements organized for two product classifications now termed Type 1 and Type 2 (amendment replaces “Class” with “Type”).
  • Test methods and type testing
    • Includes test methods and procedures for type testing, sampling, testing and compliance criteria (amendment clarifies sampling and testing tables for Type 1 and Type 2).
  • Marking, labelling and packaging
    • Requirements for product designation, marking and labelling (amendment updates designation rules and removes a prior optional line).
  • Conformity and regulatory linkage
    • Annex ZA links the standard to EU Construction Products Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 305/2011), supporting Declaration of Performance (DoP) and CE marking.
    • Defines Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP) - system 4 normally applies; micro-enterprises may apply simplified procedures under Article 37.

Applications and users

  • Who uses EN 14516:
    • Bath manufacturers - to design, test and declare conformity of bathtubs for domestic use.
    • Testing laboratories - to perform standardized cleanability and durability tests.
    • Conformity assessment bodies and notified bodies - for AVCP tasks and CE marking support.
    • Specifiers, architects and procurement teams - to select compliant sanitary appliances for buildings.
    • Regulators and market surveillance authorities - to verify DoP/CE marking claims.
  • Practical applications:
    • Product development and quality control of acrylic, enamelled steel, cast iron and other bath materials.
    • Preparing technical documentation and DoP for EU market access.
    • Contract specification for hotels, residential and institutional projects.

Related standards and regulatory context

  • EN 14516 is prepared under CEN/TC 163 (Sanitary appliances) and intended to be used in the context of the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR, Regulation (EU) No 305/2011). Annex ZA of the document details the relationship with CPR, AVCP systems and essential characteristics (cleanability, durability).
