prEN 1852-1 is a CEN draft European Standard for polypropylene (PP) piping systems used in non-pressure underground drains and sewers. It specifies the definitions, material requirements, dimensions, test parameters, joint performance and marking for solid wall pipes, fittings and the system. The standard is intended for manufacturers, specifiers, purchasers, test laboratories and installers working with buried wastewater drainage systems.
What does prEN 1852-1 specify?
prEN 1852-1 covers solid wall PP pipes and fittings with smooth internal and external surfaces, including pipes intended for use outside buildings and, when marked UD, both outside and within 1 m of a building. It also applies to joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials, and it gives test parameters for the methods it references.
The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, symbols and abbreviations, material, general characteristics, geometrical characteristics, mechanical characteristics, physical characteristics, performance requirements, sealing rings and marking.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Use of PP recyclate, including agreed specification, declarations and additional conditions |
| Annex B | General characteristics of PP pipes and fittings, such as material properties, stiffness, chemical resistance and hydraulic roughness |
| Annex C | Product standards of components that can be connected to components conforming to this standard |
The scope notes also point readers to EN 13476-2 for multilayer pipes with different compounds throughout the wall and to EN 14758-1 for PP-MD systems. It covers a range of nominal sizes and pipe series, gives colour recommendations, and leaves the final selection to the purchaser or specifier according to local requirements and installation practice.
What are the key requirements of prEN 1852-1?
prEN 1852-1 combines material control, dimensional control, mechanical and physical tests, and system-level joint performance. In practice, that means a product has to fit the size tables, pass the stated tests, and be marked so it can be identified and installed correctly.
Material and compound control
- Clause 5.1 requires the pipe and fitting compound to be PP-based, with additives allowed, and limits mineral content in the final compound to 3.0 % by mass. Recyclates are allowed only when they comply with Annex A, and their batch quantities must be recorded. This matters because the manufacturer has to control the feedstock and keep traceability on recycled content.
- Clause 5.2 requires the compound to pass internal pressure tests at the stated temperatures, stresses and test periods. This shows that the material can withstand long-term loading in buried service.
- Clauses 5.3 and 5.4 limit the melt mass-flow rate (MFR) and set an oxidation induction time (OIT) minimum. For butt fusion, the MFR classes also control which materials may be fused together. In practice, this affects weldability, processing stability and material compatibility.
Dimensions, surfaces and fitting types
- Clauses 6 and 7 require smooth, clean surfaces, square-cut ends, through-wall colour and dimensions measured to EN ISO 3126. Pipes and fittings must meet the stated outside diameters, wall thicknesses, socket dimensions and chamfer rules, and the document lists the permitted fitting types such as bends, couplers, reducers, branches, plugs and push-fit sockets. This is the part to check when a buyer needs the right size and joint form.
- Clause 7 also defines close tolerance (CT) spigot ends and the wall-thickness series used for different nominal sizes and ring stiffness classes. That matters when the component has to match a particular installation or connect with compatible systems.
Mechanical and physical performance
- Clause 8.1 requires pipe impact resistance and ring stiffness to be tested under the stated conditions, with extra low-temperature impact testing available where the national foreword requires it. This is what protects against damage during handling, installation and burial.
- Clause 8.2 classifies fittings by stiffness and adds tests for fabricated fittings, including impact strength and mechanical strength or flexibility. That keeps fittings from becoming the weak point in the system.
- Clauses 9 and 10 cover longitudinal reversion, heating effects, watertightness of fabricated fittings, and fitness-for-purpose tests for joints and the system. EN ISO 13259 checks leak tightness of elastomeric ring seal joints, and EN ISO 13257 covers elevated temperature cycling. In practice, these tests show whether the installed system will stay tight under deflection, pressure and thermal cycling.
Sealing rings and marking
- Clause 11 requires sealing rings to meet EN 681-1 or EN 681-2 and not harm the pipe, fitting or joint performance. That is important because the seal material is part of the system performance.
- Clause 12 sets the minimum marking for pipes and fittings, including the standard number, application area code, manufacturer, nominal size, wall thickness or S-series, material, CT symbol where applicable, SN class, MFR class and, for cold-climate pipes, the ice-crystal symbol. The marking also supports traceability with production period and site information.
What terms does prEN 1852-1 define?
- Application area code - The marking code that shows whether a product is intended for U use, or for both U and UD use.
- DN/OD - Nominal size related to outside diameter.
- SDR - Standard dimension ratio, the numerical designation based on outside diameter and minimum wall thickness.
- SN - Nominal ring stiffness class, the class that indicates the minimum required ring stiffness of a pipe or the stiffness of a fitting.
- MFR - Melt mass-flow rate, used to classify the base material and control fusion compatibility.
- OIT - Oxidation induction time, the thermal stability measure used in the oxygen environment test.
- CT - Close tolerance, used for spigot ends with tighter outside-diameter tolerances.
- Fabricated fitting - A fitting made by welding, thermoforming or adhesive joints from pipes and/or mouldings.
Who uses prEN 1852-1?
prEN 1852-1 is used by manufacturers of PP pipes, fittings and seals, by recyclate suppliers, by laboratories running qualification tests, and by quality managers checking conformance. Purchasers and specifiers use it to choose the right nominal size, S-series, U or UD application area and marking. Installers and designers use it when selecting components for buried non-pressure drainage and sewerage systems.
What changed in prEN 1852-1 from the previous edition?
prEN 1852-1 will supersede EN 1852-1:2018+A1:2022. Compared with that edition, the foreword states these main changes:
- updated terms and definitions in line with EN 14541-1;
- wording changed from “drainage and sewerage” to “drains and sewers” throughout the document;
- updated material clauses and annexes for the use of recyclates.

What does the prEN 1852-1 document contain?
prEN 1852-1 contains size tables, wall-thickness series, socket and spigot dimensions, and figures showing bends, branches, couplers, reducers, plugs and push-fit sockets. It also includes test tables for material, mechanical, physical and system performance, plus formulas for larger socket dimensions and for longer pipe lengths. For users, the practical value is that the document gives the numbers, test setups and marking rules needed for design, type testing, conformity assessment and product identification.

5 Material
5.1 General
The compound for production of pipes and fittings shall be PP-base material to which additives can be
added to enable conformity with the requirements of this document.
PP material may be virgin material, reworked material or recyclates.
Due to the use of additives and reworked material or recyclates, which both can contain minerals, the
maximum content of minerals in the final compound shall be ≤ 3,0 % by mass.
The content of the minerals (Ash residue) shall be tested in accordance with EN ISO 3451-1.
Recyclates are permitted if they comply with Annex A.
The minimum and maximum amounts of recyclate in the compound shall be specified by the
manufacturer and the conformity with all the requirements of this document shall be demonstrated by
testing the product:
— with no or minimum recyclate content, and
— with maximum recyclate content.
NOTE 1 Compounds with recyclate content between minimum and maximum are deemed to comply as well.
The quantity of recyclates that is added in each production batch shall be recorded by the manufacturer.
NOTE 2 The total recyclate content in the compound is the sum of the recyclate added and the recyclate present
in reworked material.
NOTE 3 Additional information on general characteristics of PP pipes and fittings is given in Annex B.
5.2 Compound characteristics for pipe and fitting
When tested in accordance with the test methods as specified in Table 1 using the indicated parameters,
