5 Requirements
5.1 General
The requirements are based upon a maximum total load of 150 kg.
Hinge-joint ladders are determined to be used by one person at a time.
5.2 Decking component
If the multiple hinge ladder can be used in a platform position, the decking component shall be
delivered with the product. The decking component shall be secured against unintentional movement
and shall have a durable slip resistant working surface. It shall be designed so as to be unable to slip and
tilt on the ladder.
5.3 Ladder hinged in the longitudinal direction
All hinges should be locked in the position of use except for the centre hinge in the standing ladder
position, which may be unlocked. The storage position (folded) is not required to be lockable.
6 Test methods
6.1 General
General provisions, see EN 131-2.
After each of the tests specified in Annex A, the ladder shall remain functional with no fracture or visible
cracks. The ladders shall sustain the load without ultimate failure. Permanent deformation is permitted.
After the test, fold the ladder completely to its storage/transportation position and open it again
completely. During this movement the locking system shall function without any interference. After the
test, the hinges/locking systems shall remain functional in all positions.
6.2 Tests method for hinge ladders
6.2.1 Principle
All the ladders conforming to Clause 3 shall comply with all tests and the requirements specified in
Annex A.
6.2.2 Strength test for ladders with hinges in longitudinal direction
The test shall be carried out on the complete ladder. The test shall be carried out on the maximum
extended ladder according to the manufacturers’ instruction. Lateral or pole type stabilizers shall not be
deployed in this test if the design permits the ladder to be used with the lateral or pole type stabilizers
removed or temporarily adjusted as permitted by EN 131-1:2015+A1:2019, 4.2.1, General.
Where the ascendable side cannot be determined by the construction of the product the ladder shall be
tested twice. For the second test the ladder shall be rotated 180° about the longitudinal axis. For the test
of the second side a new ladder shall be used.
Erect the ladder in its position of use at the maximum extension. Leaning ladders shall be erected at
(65 ± 0,5)° (measured at vertical height of 1 m

The standard EN 131-4:2020 focuses on the essential requirements, testing protocols, and marking specifications for hinged combination ladders equipped with one or multiple hinge joints. It is a crucial addition to the EN 131 series, which encompasses various standards relating to ladder safety and performance. One of the primary strengths of EN 131-4:2020 is its clarity in defining the scope of application. By specifically excluding hinge-joints of combination and standing ladders, this standard allows manufacturers and end-users to understand precisely the context in which the standard applies. This targeted approach enhances usability and compliance, ensuring that manufacturers adhere to the relevant guidelines that guarantee both functionality and safety in hinged combination ladders. Additionally, this standard's alignment with previous parts - EN 131-1, EN 131-2, and EN 131-3 - reinforces its relevance within the broader framework of ladder safety standards. The integration fosters consistency across all ladder categories, streamlining the compliance process for manufacturers who must navigate multiple standards. The detailed requirements outlined within EN 131-4:2020 ensure that ladders are subjected to rigorous testing, enhancing product reliability and safety for users. This testing not only evaluates the hinge joints but also comprehensively assesses the overall structural integrity of the ladders. The marking specifications included in the document further provide clarity for consumers and users, facilitating informed choices when selecting ladders for various applications. In summary, the EN 131-4:2020 standard significantly contributes to the safety and effectiveness of hinged combination ladders, reaffirming industry commitment to high-quality performance and consumer protection. Its precise scope and structured integration with existing standards make it a vital resource for manufacturers and users alike in the ladder industry.

The document EN 131-4:2020 establishes a comprehensive framework for the safety and performance of hinged combination ladders, delineating the specific requirements, testing protocols, and marking processes unique to these structures. Its focused scope enhances the understanding and implementation of safety measures pertinent to ladders with one or several hinge joints, ensuring that users can rely on robust guidelines for design and manufacturing. One of the strengths of EN 131-4:2020 lies in its clear demarcation, as it explicitly states that it does not cover hinge-joints of combination or standing ladders as defined by EN 131-1. This precision in scope allows manufacturers and users to avoid confusion regarding which types of ladders are subject to these particular requirements, thereby facilitating compliance and enhancing safety. In relation to its relevance, this standard seamlessly integrates with the broader suite of standards encapsulated in EN 131 series-specifically referring to EN 131-1, EN 131-2, and EN 131-3. This interconnectedness ensures that all aspects of ladder design, including stability, performance under load, and user safety, are consistently addressed across different ladder types. By doing so, EN 131-4:2020 reinforces the commitment to maintaining rigour in quality and safety in the ladder manufacturing sector. Overall, the EN 131-4:2020 is an essential document that not only provides critical guidelines for the testing and marking of hinged combination ladders but also plays a significant role in enhancing overall ladder safety standards. Its systematic approach ensures that manufacturers can deliver reliable products, while users can trust in the safety and stability of the ladders they utilize.
