Windows and curtain walling, doors, blinds and shutters - Determination of the resistance to soft and heavy body impact for doors

This European standard applies to all doors.  The standard specifies the method to be used to determine the damage caused by striking with a soft and heavy body, the face of a closed door leaf fixed in its own door frame as part of a doorset.  NOTE : Such forces that might reasonably be expected from impacts by human bodies and substantial objects with similar characteristics should neither damage, nor impair the normal performance of, a door.

Overview

EN 949:1998 (CEN) specifies a standardized test method to determine the resistance of doors to impacts by both soft and heavy bodies. The standard applies to all types of doors and covers the assessment of damage when the face of a closed door leaf - fixed in its own frame as part of a doorset - is struck. The intent is to ensure doors do not suffer damage or loss of normal performance from impacts that could reasonably be expected from human bodies or substantial objects.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Applies to all doors within doorsets (including doors in curtain walling, blinds and shutters contexts as referenced in the series) - focused on the face of a closed door leaf fixed in its frame.
  • Test purpose: Determine and quantify damage caused by striking with a soft body (simulating human-body impacts) and a heavy body (simulating substantial object impacts).
  • Damage assessment: Establishes how to observe and record damage and whether impact impairs the door’s normal performance (operation, sealing, structural integrity).
  • Performance expectation: Impacts reasonably expected from human contact or similar objects should neither damage nor impair normal door performance.
  • Standard adoption: National adoptions exist (for example SIST EN 949:2000 for Slovenia), which implement the EN 949 test method at national level.

(Note: EN 949:1998 defines test method and assessment criteria. Specific masses, impact energies and pass/fail thresholds are defined only in the standard text and are not reproduced here.)

Practical applications

  • Product development and validation for door manufacturers - ensure designs meet impact resistance expectations before market release.
  • Factory and third‑party testing laboratories - implement standardized impact tests for quality control and certification.
  • Specifiers, architects and façade engineers - select doors and doorsets suitable for high-traffic locations or areas at risk of impact.
  • Building owners and facility managers - verify durability and safety of entrance doors, emergency doors, school and hospital doors, and doors in public spaces.
  • Compliance and procurement - include EN 949 impact resistance requirements in technical specifications, tenders and regulatory submissions.

Related standards

  • EN 949 is part of the CEN suite addressing windows, curtain walling, doors, blinds and shutters; consult related CEN standards and national adoptions for additional performance aspects (air/water resistance, mechanical durability, safety glazing).
  • Example national adoption: SIST EN 949:2000 (Slovenian implementation).
