Overview
EN 1870-7:2002/prA1 is a CEN draft amendment (prA1, Jan 2009) to the European standard EN 1870-7:2002 titled "Safety of woodworking machines - Circular sawing machines - Part 7: Single blade log sawing machines with integrated feed table and manual loading and/or unloading." It deals with the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to single‑blade log sawing machines designed to cut solid wood and specifies safety requirements, measures and information for safe use. The amendment updates normative references and aligns the standard with modern machine safety principles and the EU Machinery Directive (including annexes ZA and ZB mapping to EU requirements).
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope and risk assessment: Focus on significant hazards identified by risk assessment for machines with integrated feed tables and manual loading/unloading.
- List of significant hazards: Mechanical (cutting, shearing, entanglement, crushing, drawing‑in), electrical, noise, radiation (including laser), dust and combustible material, ergonomics, unexpected start‑up, power failure and break‑up during operation.
- Control systems and electrical safety:
- Safety and reliability of control systems (references to EN ISO 13849-1 and EN 60204-1:2006).
- Requirements for starting, normal stopping, emergency stop and behaviour on power supply failure.
- Mechanical protections:
- Stability, guarding, risk of break‑up and riving knife considerations.
- Ergonomics and human factors:
- Manual handling, layout and control design to reduce human error and unhealthy postures (references to EN 1005 series, EN 614-1).
- Environmental and auxiliary systems:
- Noise mitigation, dust and fire prevention, pneumatic/hydraulic safety, lighting and maintenance access.
- Information for use:
- Machine marking and instruction handbook requirements to support safe operation, servicing and CE conformity.
Applications and Who Uses It
