prEN 3155-066 is a CEN draft European Standard in the Aerospace series for female electrical contacts, type A, crimp, class S, size 8. It specifies the required characteristics, tests and tooling for these contacts when used in elements of connection in accordance with EN 3155-002. The document is meant for manufacturers, test laboratories and users of these contacts, and it is used together with EN 3155-001; the associated male contacts are covered by EN 3155-065.

What does prEN 3155-066 specify?

prEN 3155-066 covers one product type: female electrical contacts, type A, crimp, class S, size 8. Its scope links the contacts to the EN 3155 family of elements of connection, so the standard is about a specific contact design rather than a whole connector system.

The document is organized into seven clauses plus a bibliography:

ClauseSubject
1Scope
2Normative references
3Terms and definitions
4Required characteristics
5Designation
6Marking
7Technical specification

Clause 4 is the core of the document. It groups the design data, cable compatibility, tooling, preparation, test methods and gauges that are needed to make, inspect and qualify the contacts.

What are the key requirements of prEN 3155-066?

prEN 3155-066 sets out the product definition, the allowed cable interfaces, the tooling to be used and the verification tests. In practice, this is the information a manufacturer or buyer needs to check whether a contact can be made, crimped, installed and qualified for aerospace use.

Product characteristics and dimensions

Clause 4.1 states that type A contacts are for general application and that class S covers an operating temperature range from -65 °C to 200 °C. Clause 4.2 ties the dimensions and mass to Figure 1 and Table 1, with dimensions given after surface treatment. That matters because fit, mating and interchangeability depend on the finished contact dimensions.

Identification and materials

Clause 4.3 requires colour-code marking using two bands in accordance with ISO 8843. Clause 4.4 specifies a copper alloy body with gold on an appropriate undercoat. In practice, the colour bands help identify the size/version quickly, while the material and plating define the contact interface expected in service.

Cable, stripping and tooling

Clause 4.5 lists the permissible cables for each contact/barrel combination. Clause 4.6 requires crimping tools to conform to MIL-DTL-22520 and insertion/extraction tools to conform to MIL-I-81969, with the detailed tool selections given in Tables 4 and 5. Clause 4.7 gives the stripping length for the cable before crimping. This is the part of the standard that drives shop-floor setup: the wrong cable, tool or strip length can affect crimp quality and retention.

Verification tests

Clause 4.8 gives the required test programme by reference to EN 2591 methods. It includes visual examination, dimensions and mass, contact resistance, discontinuity, electrical overload, temperature endurance, rapid temperature change, salt mist, shock, vibration, mechanical endurance, probe damage, crimped-connection tensile strength, gauge insertion/extraction forces, coating thickness, coating adhesion and magnetic permeability. Several tests also include conditions or limits, such as endurance at 200 °C, temperature cycling between 200 °C and -65 °C, tensile strength values for the two sizes, recorded coating thickness and magnetic permeability at or below 2. This is the qualification and inspection backbone of the standard.

Designation, marking and gauges

Clause 5 explains the designation code, including contact type, contact size, barrel size and delivery code, with delivery options linked to sealing sleeves in EN 4530-004. Clause 6 requires marking in accordance with EN 3155-001, and clause 7 sends technical specification requirements to EN 3155-001. Clause 4.9 also points users to EN 3155-001 for gauges.

What terms does prEN 3155-066 define?

  • Type A - The contact style covered by this standard; here it is the general-application female contact.
  • Class S - The contact class associated with the operating temperature range from -65 °C to 200 °C.
  • Crimp - The contact is joined to the conductor by crimping rather than soldering.
  • Barrel size - The size code for the wire-crimping part of the contact, used in designation and tool selection.
  • American Wire Gauge (AWG) - A wire-size system used in the tables to identify the closest conductor size.
  • Delivery code - The part of the designation that states whether a sealing sleeve is supplied and which EN 4530-004 sleeve applies.
  • Sealing sleeve - An optional sleeve supplied with the contact under the delivery codes in clause 5.

Who uses prEN 3155-066?

prEN 3155-066 is used by aerospace contact manufacturers, cable harness makers, inspection laboratories, quality teams and procurement staff. They use it to choose compatible conductors, set up crimping and insertion/extraction tooling, prepare stripped wires, verify finished contacts and write product designations for ordering and traceability.

Which standards are used with prEN 3155-066?

StandardWhat it contributes
EN 3155-001Technical specification, terms, marking and gauges for the EN 3155 contact family
EN 3155-002List and utilization of contacts
EN 3155-065Associated male contacts
EN 2083Copper or copper alloy conductors for electrical cables
EN 2591 seriesTest methods used for visual, dimensional, electrical, environmental, mechanical and coating verification
ISO 8843Identification system used for the colour-code marking
MIL-DTL-22520Crimping tools
MIL-I-81969Insertion/extraction tools
EN 4530-004Sealing sleeves referenced by the delivery code

What does the prEN 3155-066 document contain?

prEN 3155-066 contains a dimensional figure, tables for dimensions and mass, colour-code marking, permissible cable sizes, tool selections, stripping lengths and a test matrix. It also contains a designation example showing how contact type, size, barrel size and delivery code are combined. The document is structured so users can move from identification to manufacture, then to verification and marking without needing to assemble the information from separate sources.
