Assistive products for walking manipulated by both arms - Requirements and test methods - Part 2: Rollators - Amendment 1: Removal of brake requirements (ISO 11199 2:2021/Amd 1:2024)

This document specifies requirements and test methods of rollators being used as assistive products for walking with wheels, manipulated by both arms, without accessories, unless specified in the particular test procedure. This document also gives requirements relating to safety, ergonomics, performance and information supplied by the manufacturer including marking and labelling.
The requirements and tests are based on every-day use of rollators as assistive products for walking for a maximum user mass as specified by the manufacturer. This document includes rollators specified for a user mass of no less than 35 kg.
This document is not applicable to rollators with horizontal forearm supports, classified as walking tables, for which ISO 11199-3 is applicable.

Overview

EN ISO 11199-2:2021/A1:2024 - Assistive products for walking manipulated by both arms - Part 2: Rollators (Amendment 1) is a CEN-adopted amendment to ISO 11199-2:2021. It specifies requirements and test methods for rollators (wheeled walking aids manipulated by both arms), covering safety, ergonomics, performance and the information supplied by the manufacturer (including marking and labelling). Amendment 1 removes the previous brake-specific requirements and introduces clarified manoeuvrability requirements for indoor and outdoor use.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to rollators used as assistive products for walking with wheels and manipulated by both arms, without accessories unless a test procedure specifies otherwise. Includes rollators specified for a user mass of no less than 35 kg.
  • Brake requirements: Amendment 1 removes the specific brake requirements previously in the standard (ISO 11199-2:2021/Amd 1:2024).
  • Manoeuvrability (section 6.5 - amended):
    • For indoor use on level surfaces: front wheel diameter ≥ 75 mm.
    • For outdoor use: front wheel diameter ≥ 180 mm and wheel width ≥ 22 mm.
  • Safety and performance: General requirements and test methods address structural strength, stability, and performance under everyday use up to the manufacturer‑specified maximum user mass.
  • Ergonomics and information: Requirements for user interface, handle height/adjustability (where applicable), and the manufacturer’s marking, labelling and instructions for safe use and maintenance.
  • Exclusions: Not applicable to rollators with horizontal forearm supports (classified as walking tables) - see ISO 11199-3.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and designers of rollators and wheeled walking aids use this standard to ensure products meet safety, performance and labelling expectations for European and international markets.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors apply the described test methods for product verification and type testing.
  • Procurement teams in healthcare, rehabilitation and public services reference the standard when specifying compliant rollators for clinics, long‑term care facilities and accessibility programs.
  • Clinicians, therapists and assistive‑technology specialists use the standard to understand product capabilities and appropriate user mass classifications.

Related standards

  • ISO 11199-1 (general requirements for assistive products for walking) and ISO 11199-3 (walking tables / rollators with horizontal forearm supports) are relevant for broader conformity and product family comparison.
