Finger jointed structural timber - Performance requirements and minimum production requirements
This standard specifies requirements for bonded finger joints and minimum requirements for the manufacture of cut, interlocking, bonded finger joints in structural timber members. Requirements are given for timber, adhesive, moisture content, cutting and bonding.
This standard is only applicable to finger joints between timber members of the same species type.
Although most finger joints are produced in coniferous species this standard also applies to broad-leaved species where information is available to enable them to be satisfactorily bonded.
It does not cover impressed (die-formed) joints. In the case of glued laminated timber it applies only to individual laminations. Large finger joints in glued laminated timber are covered by EN 387.
NOTE This standard is elaborated as a supporting standard for a harmononized standard on structural timber with finger joints to be published in the future.

The EN 385:2001 standard provides an essential framework for the performance requirements and minimum production requirements for finger jointed structural timber. This comprehensive standard specifies the necessary conditions and stipulations for producing bonded finger joints, which are critical in ensuring the integrity and strength of structural timber members. One of the strengths of EN 385:2001 lies in its detailed scope, which includes specifications not only for the timber and adhesive used but also the moisture content, cutting, and bonding processes. This thorough approach ensures that all aspects of finger joint manufacturing are covered, allowing for consistent quality and reliability in the construction industry. The standard’s applicability to both coniferous and broad-leaved species enhances its relevance in various contexts, extending the usability of finger joints across different timber types. The inclusion of guidelines for bonding methodologies is particularly beneficial for manufacturers aiming to create cross-species finger joints, promoting versatility in materials selection. Furthermore, the standard recognizes the limitations of its scope, specifically excluding impressed (die-formed) joints and focusing solely on individual laminations in glued laminated timber. This clarity helps stakeholders in the timber supply chain understand the specific applications of EN 385:2001 and reinforces its purpose as a supporting standard for future harmonized standards related to structural timber with finger joints. Overall, EN 385:2001 stands out for its rigorous demand for quality control and its ability to facilitate reliable finger joints in structural timber, making it an indispensable resource for manufacturers and professionals in the timber construction field.
