Overview

EN ISO 12216:2022/A11:2023 is a CEN amendment to the European/ISO standard that addresses strength and watertightness requirements for small craft windows, portlights, hatches, deadlights and doors. Published April 2023 and approved 15 February 2023, this amendment (A11) updates EN ISO 12216:2022 to clarify requirements used for design, testing and conformity assessment of prefabricated and fitted openings in hulls, decks and superstructures. The document also includes Annex ZA that maps the standard to the essential requirements of Directive 2013/53/EU (Recreational Craft Directive) for presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Strength requirements for glazing, frames and closing mechanisms to ensure structural integrity of openings on small craft.
  • Watertightness and weathertightness provisions to reduce ingress of water through windows, portlights, hatches and doors under operational and environmental loads.
  • Documentation and owner’s manual content references (see clauses linked in Annex ZA) that support safe use, maintenance and risk management.
  • Conformity and regulatory linkage: Annex ZA provides the relationship with Directive 2013/53/EU and lists normative references that must be used to claim presumption of conformity.
  • Normative references to relevant test and material standards (see Related Standards) that are normatively referenced and indispensable for applying the standard.

Practical applications

  • Provides a harmonized technical basis for designing and specifying windows, portlights, hatches and doors on small craft to meet safety and performance expectations.
  • Guides manufacturers and component suppliers on required performance characteristics and documentation to support EU conformity.
  • Directs test laboratories and inspection bodies on referenced test methods and related standards needed to verify strength and watertightness.
  • Assists naval architects, boatbuilders and certification bodies in selecting compliant components and preparing technical files for market access under the Recreational Craft Directive.

Who should use this standard

  • Small craft manufacturers and OEMs
  • Component suppliers (glazing, frames, hatch manufacturers)
  • Design engineers and naval architects
  • Testing laboratories, classification societies and regulators
  • Compliance officers preparing Declaration of Conformity for EU market

Related standards

Normative references in Annex ZA include (non‑exhaustive): ISO 6603-1:2000, ISO 11336-1:2012, ISO 12217 series (2015), and European standards such as EN 356:1999 and EN 1063:1999. These referenced standards are integral when applying EN ISO 12216:2022/A11:2023 for testing and conformity purposes.
