Overview
EN 13392:2001 (CEN) specifies a standardized laboratory method for the determination of linear density of monofilaments (single-filament yarns). The standard defines the test principle, required apparatus, sampling and specimen preparation, conditioning, weighing procedure, calculation and reporting rules. Results are expressed in dtex (decitex) with specified rounding conventions, and Annex A provides a method to calculate nominal linear density for round monofilaments from nominal diameter and polymer density.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Measurement of mass per unit length (linear density) of monofilaments; calculation method for nominal linear density of round monofilaments (Annex A).
- Units and expression: Linear density reported in dtex (1 tex = 1 g/1000 m). Rounding rules: one decimal for ≤50 dtex, nearest whole number for >50 dtex.
- Apparatus:
- Metering device (wrap reel or rule) capable of measuring length with 0.1% accuracy under the specified tension (0.05 cN/dtex ±10%); reel circumference ≥ 1 m.
- Balance with capacity and sensitivity such that specimen mass can be measured to within 0.1%.
- Sampling and specimens:
- Reject at least the first layer on each package.
- Take five specimens per package (lengths depend on nominal diameter - see Table 1 in the standard).
- For diameters <0.5 mm a wrap reel is normally used; for ≥0.5 mm use a rule.
- Conditioning: Specimens conditioned in the standard atmosphere per EN 20139 (ISO 139:1973) - (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 2) % RH for at least 24 hours.
- Procedure and calculation:
- Weigh conditioned specimens; calculate linear density T (dtex) from mass m (g) and length L (m) using the formula in the standard: T = (m / L) × 10 000.
- Annex A gives the method to compute nominal linear density from nominal diameter and polymer density; a table of nominal polymer densities (PE-HD, PP, various PAs, PET, PBT, PPS, PEEK) is included.
- Reporting: Test report must reference EN 13392 and include product identification, sampling, measured linear density (and statistical data if required), nominal linear density (if applicable), and any deviations.
Applications and users
EN 13392 is directly useful for:
- Quality control laboratories in textile and synthetic-fibre manufacturing
- Monofilament producers (fishing lines, industrial filaments, medical filaments, filter fibres)
- Incoming inspection for filament raw materials and suppliers
- R&D and material specification work where accurate mass-per-length is required
The standard ensures consistent, comparable linear density results for product specification, quality assurance and regulatory documentation.
