General Information

Abstract

This European Standard is applicable to structural bearings, whether used in bridges or in other structures. This European Standard does not cover: a) bearings that transmit moments as a primary function; b) bearings that resist uplift; c) bearings for moving bridges; d) concrete hinges; e) seismic devices. Although it is not intended to regulate temporary bearings, this standard may be used as a guide in this case (temporary bearings are bearings used during construction or repair and maintenance of structures).

Overview

EN 1337-1:2000 - Structural bearings: Part 1: General design rules is a European Standard published by CEN that sets out the general principles and design rules for structural bearings used in bridges and other structures. The standard provides a consistent European framework for specifying bearing behavior, design considerations and suitability for service. It is widely adopted in national implementations (for example SIST EN 1337-1:2001).

This part addresses general design aspects; it is not a product specification for a particular bearing type but a reference for designers and manufacturers developing bearing solutions for structural applications.

Key Topics

The standard focuses on high-level, practical design rules relevant to structural bearing engineering, including:

  • Scope and applicability - defines which types of bearings are covered and which are excluded.
  • Load and movement considerations - principles for accommodating vertical loads, rotations and horizontal displacements in design.
  • Design principles - guidance on selecting bearings to meet structural performance, durability and serviceability requirements.
  • Interface and installation - considerations for bearing seating, alignment and tolerances to ensure proper force transfer.
  • Durability and material selection - general guidance to ensure long-term performance in service environments.
  • Quality and conformity - criteria for using the standard as a basis for specifying and verifying bearing design.

Important exclusions explicitly stated in the scope:

  • Bearings that transmit moments as a primary function
  • Bearings that resist uplift
  • Bearings for moving bridges
  • Concrete hinges
  • Seismic devices

The standard also notes that while temporary bearings (used during construction, repair or maintenance) are not primarily regulated, the document may be used as a design guide for those situations.

Applications

EN 1337-1:2000 is used to inform the design and selection of structural bearings in:

  • Road and railway bridges (fixed and pinned supports where uplift/moment resistance is not primary)
  • Building structures requiring engineered bearing solutions
  • Refurbishment and maintenance projects where replacement or temporary bearings are specified

The standard is especially valuable where consistent European design practice is required across cross-border projects.

Who uses this standard

Typical users include:

  • Structural and bridge engineers
  • Bearing manufacturers and suppliers
  • Construction contractors and installers
  • Design offices and consulting engineers
  • National standards bodies and regulatory authorities

Related standards

  • Other parts of the EN 1337 series (covering specific bearing types and testing) complement Part 1 by providing product-specific rules and test methods.
  • National adoptions (e.g., SIST EN 1337-1) implement the standard within local regulatory frameworks.
