Sanitary tapware - Extractable shower hoses for sanitary tapware for supply systems type 1 and type 2 - General technical specification
This European Standard applies to hoses for extractable outlets of any material intended for equipping sanitary tapware for sinks and basins. Such hoses will only be connected downstream of the obturator of the tapware. The tapware will comply with EN 200, EN 817, EN 1111, EN 1286 or EN 1287 (see [1], [2], [3], [5] and [6]).
Hoses intended to connect sanitary tapware to the water supplies are not covered by this standard.
This European Standard specifies:
- the dimensional, mechanical and hydraulic characteristics with which the hose for extractable outlets shall comply;
- the procedures for testing these characteristics.
Details of pressures and temperatures are given in Table 1.

- les caractéristiques dimensionnelles, de comportement mécanique et hydraulique auxquelles doivent répondre les flexibles pour douchettes extractibles ;

– mere in mehanske ter hidravlične značilnosti, s katerimi morajo biti skladne cevi za izvlečljive priključke;
– postopke za preskušanje teh značilnosti.
Podrobnosti glede tlaka in temperature so navedene v preglednici 1.

Overview
EN 16146:2012+A1:2014 is a CEN European standard that defines the general technical specification for extractable shower hoses used with sanitary tapware for supply systems type 1 and type 2. It applies to flexible hoses of any material that connect the tapware downstream of the tap obturator to extractable outlets (e.g., pull‑out spray heads for sinks and basins). Hoses that connect tapware directly to the water supply are explicitly excluded.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and designation
- Defines how hoses are designated (type, thread dimensions, length, sheath material, nut type, EN 16146 reference and flow‑rate class).
- Materials and hygiene
- All wetted materials must be safe for drinking water and not alter water quality, appearance, smell or taste.
- Visible Ni‑Cr coatings must comply with EN 248.
- Dimensional characteristics
- Specifies connecting thread sizes and permitted dimensional deviations (e.g., G 1/2, G 3/8, 15×1 mm and related conical nut dimensions).
- Hydraulic characteristics
- Flow‑rate classes and test procedures are defined; Table 1 sets operating ranges and recommended pressures/temperatures:
- Type 1: Dynamic pressure typically 0.05–0.5 MPa (recommended 0.1–0.3 MPa); temperature up to 70 °C. Flow classes: Class 1 (Q ≥ 0.25 l/s) and Class 2 (Q ≥ 0.15 l/s).
- Type 2: Dynamic pressure typically 0.01–0.2 MPa (recommended 0.02–0.10 MPa); temperature up to 60 °C. Flow classes: Class E (0.06–0.18 l/s) and Class H (Q ≥ 0.18 l/s).
- Flow‑rate classes and test procedures are defined; Table 1 sets operating ranges and recommended pressures/temperatures:
- Mechanical and leaktightness tests
- Includes tensile strength, flexing durability, long‑term durability, pressure resistance at elevated temperature, thermal shock and rotary connection tests.
- Marking
- Manufacturer/supplier mark is required; flow‑rate class must be indicated (not necessarily permanently).
Applications and users
- Product designers and manufacturers of sanitary tapware (pull‑out spray hoses, kitchen/basin mixers)
- Component suppliers (hose and nut producers) ensuring compatibility and compliance
- Test laboratories executing hydraulic, mechanical and durability tests
- Specifiers, installers and procurement teams seeking compliant products for residential and commercial sanitary fittings
- Regulatory bodies and certification schemes assessing suitability for potable water systems
Related standards
- Tapware standards referenced for upstream components: EN 200, EN 817, EN 1111, EN 1286, EN 1287
- Normative references cited: EN 248 (Ni‑Cr coatings) and EN ISO 228‑1 (thread dimensions)
EN 16146:2012+A1:2014 is essential for ensuring safe, durable and correctly dimensioned extractable shower hoses for sanitary tapware, and for guiding testing and product marking to meet European market expectations.
