a) appareils fixes fonctionnant au butane commercial et/ou au propane commercial ;
c) toute la chaleur produite par le processus de la combustion se dégage dans l'espace à chauffer ;

Overview
EN 449:2002+A1:2007 (CEN) is the European specification for dedicated liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) appliances: domestic flueless space heaters, including diffusive catalytic combustion heaters. It sets the requirements, test methods and marking for appliances with a nominal heat input (Hs) up to 4.2 kW burning 3rd‑family gases at nominal operating pressures up to 50 mbar. The standard covers fixed, portable and mobile heaters intended to release all combustion heat into the heated space.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and appliance types: fixed wall/floor heaters, portable heaters connected via flexible tubing, and mobile heaters that contain an LPG container compartment.
- Safety and constructional requirements: design criteria to ensure safe operation in domestic environments (combustion performance, flame stability, prevention of light‑back and flame lift).
- Test methods: type testing procedures to verify combustion performance, burner stability, catalytic pad operation, and other safety parameters.
- Marking and instructions: mandatory labeling and user/installation instructions for safe use in the intended destination country.
- Classification: appliance and gas categories based on gas family, Wobbe index and nominal supply pressures (examples include categories I3B, I3P and mixed I3B/P up to 50 mbar).
- Definitions and components: burner types (aerated/non‑aerated), catalytic units, flame supervision devices, thermostats, injectors and other auxiliary equipment.
- Annexes: Annex A (special national conditions), Annex B (vitiation room for CO/CO2 testing), Annex C (air supply and ventilation guidance), Annex ZA (relationship with EU Directives).
Note: EN 449 excludes electrically operated gas control systems, LPG container standards, regulators, tubing and flexible hoses (these are subject to national/regional requirements). It addresses type testing only and does not set production QA/certification processes.
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers and product designers of domestic flueless LPG heaters - to design compliant appliances and prepare technical files.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors - to perform the standardized type tests required for CE marking/market access in CEN member states.
- Regulators and standards bodies - for national adoption and alignment with EU safety requirements.
- Installers, retailers and safety engineers - to interpret marking and user/instruction requirements and ensure safe placement and ventilation in homes.
