European foreword
This document (prEN 18126:2025) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 181 “Appliances
and leisure vehicle installations using liquefied petroleum gas and appliances using natural gas for
outdoor use”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the CEN Enquiry.
This document has been prepared under a standardization request addressed to CEN by the European
Commission. The Standing Committee of the EFTA States subsequently approves these requests for its
Member States.
For the relationship with EU Legislation, see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this
document.
Outdoor heating and cooking appliances (barbecues, heating umbrellas.) are generally designed,
manufactured and certified for exclusive operation with liquefied petroleum gases. The state of the art of
gas distribution and connection makes it possible to develop outdoor uses of appliances supplied with
natural gas. This standard has been developed to complete the CEN/TC 181 standards for manufacturing,
testing and marking appliances covered by CEN/TC 181 for outdoor operating with second-family gases.
1 Scope
This document applies to household appliances intended for outdoor use capable of working with gases
of the second family or second and third family.
The scope of this document is the same as the scope of the product standards developed by the European
Technical Committee CEN/TC 181 covering the same type of appliance but limited to the use of liquefied
petroleum gases, hereinafter referred to as ‘the product standard’.
NOTE For example, product standards are:
— for an independent cooktop: EN 484;
— for multi-purpose burners with integrated support: EN 497;
— for a barbecue or griddle: EN 498;
— for a patio heater: EN 14543;
— flueless non-domestic space heaters: EN 461;
— .
This document applies to the manufacturing, testing and marking of appliances prior to their placing on
the market and during further assessments. This document is not intended to be used for changing the
gas category of an appliance already put on the market.
This document specifies the modifications of the appliances allowed to change the type of gas to be used
depending of its gas category.
This document specifies the complementary information and requirement about constructional and
performance characteristics, safety specifications and rational use of energy, relevant test methods and
marking of household appliances intended for outdoor use capable of operating with second-family gases
(defined in EN 437:2021).
This document does not apply to appliances burning liquefied petroleum gases at the vapour pressure
within the gas cartridge or gas cylinder.
This document does not apply to appliances under the scope of EN 449:2002+A1:2007.

4 Classification of gases and appliance categories
Gases are classified into families and groups in accordance with EN 437:2021.
Appliances are classified into categories in accordance with EN 437:2021.
NOTE Guidance for extension to other categories is specified in EN 437:2021, Annex C.

5.2 Adaptation to different gases
5.2.1 General
For single gas categories (only one family) the adjusters, if any, shall be locked and sealed.
The only operations allowed to change groups within the second gas family or to switch from a gas of the
second family to a gas of the third family, and vice versa, and/or to adapt to the different supply pressures
of a gas are described in the paragraphs below, for each of the following categories.
5.2.2 Categories I I I or I
2E+, 2H, 2E 2EK
No adjustment to the appliance shall be possible.
5.2.3 Categories II , II , II , II , II , II , II , II , II II or II
2E+3+ 2E+3P 2E+3B/P 2H3+ 2H3P 2H3B/P 2E3+ 2E3P 2E3B/P, 2EK3P 2EK3B/P
The following adjustment or change of parts is permitted only for the purpose of switching from a gas
from one family to a gas of another family:
— change of calibrated injectors or orifices;
— adjustment of the primary air intake;
— adjustment of reduced gas rate, if any;
— modification of the pilot burner for appliances fitted with an atmospheric control device.
These operations shall be possible without requiring the disconnection of the appliances, but shall be
carried out outside the presence of gases.
Unless otherwise specified, compliance with the requirements of this clause shall be verified by visual
inspection following the technical documentation.
5.3 Gas connections
These requirements are verified by visual inspection and measurement of dimensions.
The inlet connection shall have a thread according to EN ISO 228-1:2003 or to EN 10226-1:2004 or
EN 10226-2:2005, or shall have a compression fitting. In the first case, the end of the inlet connection
shall be flat to allow the use of a sealing washer.
NOTE Types of connection used in various countries are given in Table A.1 of Clause A.3 of informative
Annex A.
The pipe carrying the inlet connection shall be fixed to the appliance body in a rigid way.
For category II appliances (designed for use on gases of the second and third families), if a hose tail for
connection by a tubing is mounted on the appliance, it shall be capable of being dismantled to allow
connection to the thread mentioned above. The hose tail shall comply with the corresponding
requirements of
