Overview
EN ISO 15083:2020/A11:2023 is a European standard amendment addressing bilge-pumping systems for small craft. Prepared by the Technical Committee CEN/TC 464 “Small Craft” and published by CEN, this amendment updates the EN ISO 15083:2020 to ensure alignment with the latest safety and technical requirements. It applies to systems designed for the removal of normal bilge water accumulation in small boats and supports compliance with the essential requirements of the EU Directive 2013/53/EU on recreational craft.
This standard is vital for manufacturers, designers, and regulatory bodies involved in the marine industry, particularly those focused on small vessels. EN ISO 15083:2020/A11:2023 promotes safety, reliability, and conformity of bilge-pumping systems across CEN member countries and other regions recognizing European standards.
Key Topics
Scope of Bilge-Pumping Systems
The standard specifies requirements for bilge pumps used to remove water typically accumulated on board small craft. It explicitly excludes pumps intended for emergency damage control and does not cover related components such as cockpits, wells, and ventilation fittings.Compliance with EU Directive 2013/53/EU
EN ISO 15083:2020/A11:2023 offers a voluntary but recognized method to demonstrate conformity with essential health and safety requirements defined in the Directive for recreational craft and personal watercraft.Standardization and Harmonization
This amendment must be adopted as a national standard by CEN members by October 2023, replacing conflicting standards. It ensures uniformity in regulatory compliance and product quality across multiple European countries.Referenced Standards for Bilge Systems
The document references key international and European standards essential for comprehensive small craft safety, including:- ISO 8666 (Small craft principal data)
- ISO 8849 (Electrically operated DC bilge pumps)
- ISO 9093 (Seacocks and through-hull fittings)
- ISO 12217 series (Stability and buoyancy assessment)
- ISO 13297 (Electrical systems - AC installations)
- IEC 60529 (Degrees of protection provided by enclosures)
Patent Rights Notice
The standard acknowledges that some system elements may be subject to patent rights, advising users to verify these aspects during implementation.
Applications
Small Craft Manufacturing
Ensuring that bilge-pumping systems installed during production meet recognized safety and performance criteria to comply with European market regulations.Marine Equipment Design
Guiding designers and engineers in developing efficient and compliant bilge-pumping solutions tailored to the unique conditions of small boats.Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Assisting manufacturers and testing bodies in applying a recognized standard as evidence for CE marking and regulatory approval within the EU and EFTA.Maintenance and Upgrading of Existing Systems
Providing a reference framework for maintenance professionals and boat owners aiming to upgrade or verify bilge-pumping systems’ effectiveness and conformity.Quality Assurance Programs
Supporting companies in implementing quality control measures in accordance with standardized safety and functionality benchmarks.
Related Standards
To ensure full compliance and operational safety of small craft bilge-pumping systems, EN ISO 15083:2020/A11:2023 should be used in conjunction with the following key standards:
- ISO 8666:2020 - Small craft principal dimensions and data
- ISO 8849:2020 - Electrically operated direct-current bilge pumps
- ISO 9093-1:2020 - Seacocks and through-hull fittings
- ISO 12217 Series - Stability and buoyancy assessment and categorization for both sailing and non-sailing boats
- ISO 13297:2020/Amd 1:2022 - Electrical systems for alternating current installations on small craft
- IEC 60529:2013 - Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)
Adherence to these interconnected standards ensures comprehensive safety, operational reliability, and regulatory compliance for small craft, particularly relating to bilge water management systems.
