prEN ISO 10426-1
(Main)Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy - Cements and materials for well cementing - Part 1: Specification (ISO/DIS 10426-1:2026)
General Information
- Abstract
ISO 10426-1:2009 specifies requirements and gives recommendations for six classes of well cements, including their chemical and physical requirements and procedures for physical testing.
ISO 10426-1:2009 is applicable to well cement classes A, B, C and D, which are the products obtained by grinding Portland cement clinker and, if needed, calcium sulfate as an interground additive. Processing additives can be used in the manufacture of cement of these classes. Suitable set-modifying agents can be interground or blended during manufacture of class D cement.
ISO 10426-1:2009 is also applicable to well cement classes G and H, which are the products obtained by grinding clinker with no additives other than one or more forms of calcium sulfate, water or chemical additives as required for chromium (VI) reduction.

Overview
prEN ISO 10426-1:2026 is an international standard specifies the requirements for cements and materials used for well cementing in the oil and gas industries, including the growing sector of lower carbon energy. Developed under the auspices of CEN and aligned with ISO and API standards, this document provides rigorous specifications for well cement classes, including chemical and physical properties, and outlines testing procedures to ensure safety, quality, and performance during subsurface cementing operations.
This standard is crucial in supporting reliable, sustainable, and environmentally responsible practices for well construction, completion, and abandonment-key processes for both traditional fossil fuel and emerging low-carbon energy operations.
Key Topics
- Well Cement Classes: Covers specifications for eight well cement classes (A, B, C, D, G, H, K, and L) used in various subsurface environments and conditions.
- Classes A, B, C, D: Derived from grinding Portland cement clinker; may include additives for specific properties.
- Classes G, H: Produced by grinding clinker with calcium sulfate and minimal additional additives.
- Classes K, L: Composite cements manufactured with specified composite constituents, enhancing performance and sustainability.
- Chemical and Physical Requirements: Details on chemical composition, set modification, and strength development to meet operational demands.
- Testing Procedures: Defines standardized methods for physical testing of cement, ensuring repeatable and comparable results across the industry.
- Environmental Assessment: Introduces requirements for Global Warming Potential (GWP) assessment using verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and life cycle analysis as per ISO 14025, ISO 14040, ISO 14044, and EN 15804.
- Alignment with API Spec 10A: Supplements and updates to requirements from API Spec 10A, 25th edition, ensuring international harmonization.
Applications
The application of prEN ISO 10426-1:2026 supports critical operations in the oil and gas industry and extends to energy transition and lower carbon projects. Practical uses include:
- Well Construction and Integrity: Ensuring borehole structural integrity during drilling, completion, and abandonment phases for oil, gas, and geothermal wells.
- Material Selection: Provides guidance for engineers and procurement teams to select the most appropriate cements based on environmental, geological, and operational needs.
- Sustainability Assessment: Mandates EPDs for cements, facilitating transparency in environmental performance and supporting carbon reduction strategies.
- Quality Assurance: Standardizes testing and documentation so that well cement materials meet stringent safety and performance criteria worldwide.
Related Standards
Several standards intersect with prEN ISO 10426-1:2026, ensuring a comprehensive approach to well cementing and environmental responsibility:
- API Spec 10A, 25th Edition (2019): Reference specification for cements and materials in well cementing.
- ISO 14025: Requirements for Type III environmental product declarations.
- ISO 21930: Core rules for environmental product declarations in construction products and services.
- EN 15804: European standards for environmental product declarations in construction works.
- ISO 14040 / ISO 14044: Principles, framework, and requirements for life cycle assessment (LCA) of products.
By adhering to prEN ISO 10426-1:2026 and its referenced standards, the global energy sector ensures reliable, high-performance cementing while advancing sustainability and transparency in well construction practices. This is essential for managing operational risks, meeting regulatory requirements, and supporting the transition toward lower carbon energy solutions.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
