Overview
EN ISO 7751:2016 is a key international standard specifying the ratios of proof pressure and minimum burst pressure to maximum working pressure for rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies. Developed by ISO/TC 45 and CEN/TC 218, this standard provides essential guidelines for ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of hose products used in various industrial applications.
This standard supports manufacturers, testers, and users by defining critical pressure ratios that hoses must withstand under testing relative to their designed maximum working pressure. It replaces earlier editions and introduces updated terminology and an extended scope, including new categories such as hoses for delivering cement, concrete, plaster, and grout.
Key Topics
Proof Pressure Ratio
EN ISO 7751:2016 defines the ratio of proof pressure to maximum working pressure which hoses must endure during hydrostatic testing, typically carried out according to ISO 1402. Proof pressure testing verifies the structural integrity of the hose under pressure, confirming its safety for operational use.Minimum Burst Pressure Ratio
The standard also specifies the minimum burst pressure ratio relative to maximum working pressure. Burst pressure tests assess the hose’s failure point, ensuring an adequate safety margin beyond normal operating conditions.Pressure Ratios for Hose Types
The standard categorizes hoses by their intended service and prescribes guidance ratios for each type:- Water hoses with max working pressure ≤ 1 MPa: proof pressure ratio 1.5, minimum burst 3.0
- Hoses for liquids, solids in liquids, or air (≥ 1 MPa): proof ratio 2.0, burst ratio 4.0
- Hoses for compressed air and gases: proof ratio 2.0, burst ratio 4.0
- Hoses for media that vaporize under pressure reduction: proof ratio 2.5, burst ratio 5.0
- Steam hoses: proof ratio 5.0, burst ratio 10.0
- Jetting hoses: proof ratio 1.5, burst ratio 2.5
- Hoses for cement, concrete, plaster, and grout delivery: proof ratio 1.5, burst ratio 2.0
Scope and Terminology Updates
The term "maximum working pressure" supersedes "design working pressure" to align with modern usage. The standard references ISO 8330 for consistent vocabulary.
Applications
EN ISO 7751:2016 is applicable across a broad range of industries where rubber and plastic hoses are critical components:
Industrial Fluid Transfer
Ensuring hoses transporting liquids, slurries, and air meet rigorous proof and burst pressure performance for safe and uninterrupted operation.Construction and Mining
Specialized hoses for delivering cement, concrete, plaster, and grout in construction settings require defined pressure margins to support heavy-duty pumping equipment.Oil and Gas
Hoses exposed to gaseous media or steam benefit from higher proof and burst ratios to withstand challenging pressure and temperature conditions.Agriculture and Irrigation
Water hoses designed under this standard offer dependable pressure ratings suited for irrigation systems and water transfer.Cleaning and Jetting Services
Jetting hoses used in high-pressure cleaning applications rely on EN ISO 7751’s guidelines to maintain safety during intense operating pressures.
