Overview

EN 1906:2012/prA1:2017 is a European Standard developed by CEN that establishes requirements and test methods for lever handles and knob furniture used in building hardware. This standard applies to components such as door lever handles, knobs, push pads, and similar devices that operate latches or locks. It covers critical aspects like spindle and fastening elements, operating torque, permissible free play, safety, free angular movement, misalignment, durability, static strength, and corrosion resistance.

The standard is essential for ensuring the quality, safety, and performance of door hardware used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. It classifies usage according to frequency and usage conditions, enabling manufacturers and installers to select appropriate products according to specific application needs.

Key Topics

  • Test Methods: Specifies standardized procedures for testing durability, static strength, torque, and corrosion resistance of lever handles and knob furniture.
  • Performance Requirements: Defines maximum permissible free play, operating torques, and durability levels to ensure product reliability under frequent use.
  • Safety and Ergonomics: Includes requirements for free angular movement and misalignment to ensure smooth operation and user safety.
  • Material and Build Quality: Addresses corrosion resistance and strength to sustain different environmental conditions and extend product lifespan.
  • Marking and Identification: Products must be marked with manufacturer details, model identification, standard compliance number, door thickness range, and manufacture date.
  • Classification for Fire and Smoke Control: Categorizes hardware by grades A, B, C, and D based on suitability for smoke-control and fire-resistant doors, requiring documented evidence such as test reports or accredited assessments following EN 1634 series standards.

Applications

This standard is applicable for professionals and manufacturers involved in:

  • Building hardware production for residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities.
  • Door and window hardware selection ensuring compliance with safety and performance regulations.
  • Fire-resistant and smoke-control door applications, where hardware compliance with rigorous fire and smoke performance is mandatory.
  • Quality assurance and testing laboratories conducting product certification and performance evaluation.
  • Architects, builders, and facility managers specifying hardware that meets durability and safety requirements for high-usage environments.

By adhering to EN 1906:2012/prA1:2017, stakeholders ensure that door furniture meets essential performance, safety, and durability standards conducive to secure and efficient building access systems.

Related Standards

  • EN 1634-1, EN 1634-2, EN 1634-3: Test methods and criteria for fire resistance and smoke control performance of door components.
  • EN 12209: Hardware for locks and locking mechanisms - Requirements and test methods.
  • CEN/TC 33: Technical committee scope covering doors, windows, shutters, building hardware, and curtain walling.
  • ISO 9001: Quality management systems, indirectly related through manufacturing process controls for compliant hardware products.
