Overview

EN 27627-1:1993 titled Hardmetals - Chemical analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrometry - Part 1: General requirements (ISO 7627-1:1983) is a European Standard developed by CEN that outlines the general requirements for the chemical analysis of hardmetals using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). This standard provides a foundational framework to ensure accurate and consistent determination of elemental content within various types of hardmetals.

The standard applies to the analysis of carbides such as chromium, niobium, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, and vanadium, as well as their mixtures and binder metals. It also covers all grades of presintered or sintered hardmetals and coated hardmetals after the coating’s complete removal. Subsequent parts of ISO 7627 detail the specific element determination methods.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
    The method is applicable to:

    • Carbides of chromium, niobium, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium
    • Mixtures of these carbides and binder metals
    • All grades of presintered or sintered hardmetals produced from these carbides
    • Coated hardmetals after complete removal of coatings
  • Elements Analyzed
The standard and its subsequent parts address determination by FAAS of elements including:

    • Calcium (Ca), Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Sodium (Na)
    • Cobalt (Co), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni)
    • Molybdenum (Mo), Titanium (Ti), Vanadium (V)
    • Chromium (Cr) – with iron, nickel, cobalt and manganese also determinable within ranges
  • Principle of Method
The method involves complete dissolution of a prepared test portion, followed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry to quantify elemental concentrations.

  • Minimizing Interferences
Interfering effects are minimized by carefully matching the matrix composition of calibration solutions with that of test samples to ensure analytical accuracy.

  • Reagents and Equipment

    • Use of high-purity reagents and double-distilled or equivalent purity water is mandated
    • Standard laboratory equipment combined with flame atomic absorption spectrometry instrumentation is required
    • Single-element hollow-cathode lamps and optimized measurement parameters are recommended for better sensitivity
  • Sampling and Preparation
Samples may be crushed if necessary, ensuring no contamination or alteration of composition. Lubricants must be removed before analysis. At least three test portions are required to guarantee representative results.

  • Test Reporting
Comprehensive test reports should include reference to the standard, sample identification details, mean results of analyses, any deviations from the standard procedure, and any factors influencing test results.

Applications

The EN 27627-1 standard plays a crucial role in industries utilizing hardmetal materials, including:

  • Powder Metallurgy: Ensuring precise chemical composition analyses for powder metallurgy applications where hardmetals are commonly used.
  • Cutting Tools Manufacturing: Confirming elemental consistency in the production of sintered carbide cutting tools to guarantee durability and performance.
  • Coated Hardmetals Quality Control: Verifying elemental content after coating removal to maintain product standards in coatings and surface treatments.
  • Metallurgical Laboratories: Providing a standardized method for chemical analysis that supports research and quality assurance in metal alloy development.

Related Standards

EN 27627-1 is part 1 of a series aligned with ISO 7627, with subsequent parts specifying elemental determination methods by FAAS:

  • ISO 7627-2: Determination of calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium
  • ISO 7627-3: Determination of cobalt, iron, manganese, nickel
  • ISO 7627-4: Determination of molybdenum, titanium, vanadium
  • ISO 7627-5: Determination of cobalt, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, vanadium at higher concentrations
  • ISO 7627-6: Determination of chromium and related elements

These related standards expand on the general requirements by detailing procedures and instrument settings optimized for specific elements, ensuring comprehensive chemical profiling of hardmetals.

Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of developing International Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been authorized has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take patt in the work. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the ISO Council.
