Overview
EN 1329-1:2020 is the CEN European standard that specifies requirements for PVC‑U (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) plastics piping systems used for soil and waste discharge (low and high temperature) within the building structure. It covers solid‑wall pipes with smooth internal and external surfaces, fittings and the complete system for use either:
- Inside buildings (application area code B), and
- Inside buildings and buried in ground within the building structure (application area code BD; components for buried use are for nominal outside diameters ≥ 75 mm).
The document also defines test parameters for referenced test methods and gives recommendations on sizes, series and colours. It aligns with other product standards listed in Annex B and supersedes EN 1329‑1:2014+A1:2018.
Key Topics
- Material requirements: PVC‑U formulations for pipes and fittings, allowances for mineral modifiers and limited use of non‑virgin material (see Annex A).
- Geometrical characteristics: outside diameter, wall thickness, out‑of‑roundness, socket and spigot dimensions and joint geometry to ensure system compatibility.
- Mechanical & physical properties: impact resistance, resistance to internal pressure (test parameters referenced to EN ISO methods), and additional mechanical tests for fittings.
- Performance requirements: system performance for soil, waste and ventilating branches as well as internal rainwater systems.
- Sealing rings & adhesives: specifications for elastomeric seals and adhesive joints used in non‑pressure piping.
- Marking & identification: product marking including application code (“B” or “BD”), material identification and traceability.
- Reaction to fire: provisions added in the 2020 revision.
- Normative references: cross‑references to EN 1401‑1, EN 476, EN 681, EN 14680 and other EN/ISO test standards.
Applications
EN 1329‑1:2020 is intended for:
- Manufacturers designing and producing PVC‑U pipes and fittings for soil, waste and rainwater drainage inside buildings.
- Specifiers and purchasers (consultants, architects, MEP engineers) for selecting compliant systems and confirming suitability for “B” or “BD” applications.
- Installers and contractors relying on standardized joint dimensions and performance requirements for proper installation.
- Test laboratories and conformity bodies applying the referenced test methods and marking requirements.
Practical uses include internal soil stacks, branch drainage, ventilating sections of wastewater systems and internal rainwater downpipes where PVC‑U benefits (chemical resistance, ease of installation) are required.

EN 1329-1:2020 establishes a comprehensive framework for the specifications of unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) piping systems, particularly designed for soil and waste discharge within building structures. The primary scope of this standard includes solid wall pipes with smooth internal and external surfaces that are extruded uniformly from the same formulation throughout the wall. This specification serves applications categorized both inside buildings and in buried installations, addressing key requirements for durability and functionality in varying temperature conditions. One of the strengths of EN 1329-1:2020 is its detailed classification of application areas, specifically distinguishing between pipes marked "B" for above-ground usage and "BD" for buried applications within the building structure. Such a classification promotes clarity and ensures that the applications are suitable for their intended environments. The standard also explicitly defines the limitations for components, noting that those marked with "BD" must have nominal outside diameters of 75 mm or greater, which addresses structural integrity and performance expectations in soil and waste discharge scenarios. Additionally, the document outlines specifications not only for pipes but also for fittings and the overall system, reinforcing the importance of a cohesive approach in plumbing solutions. Furthermore, it recognizes the need for ventilation in pipework related to discharge applications and includes provisions for rainwater management within building structures, thus expanding its relevance to various critical plumbing functions. The standard is particularly noteworthy for its specified test parameters, which ensure that the performance characteristics of the piping systems can be validated against recognized methods. By incorporating guidelines on nominal sizes and series of pipes and fittings, as well as recommendations on colour choices, EN 1329-1:2020 empowers purchasers and specifiers to make informed decisions tailored to specific project needs while aligning with national regulations and installation practices. In conclusion, EN 1329-1:2020 robustly addresses the technical and operational specifications required for PVC-U piping systems used in soil and waste discharge applications. Its comprehensive scope and structured classifications illustrate its importance in ensuring compliance and reliability in plumbing practices within building structures.
